Tuesday, October 29: Traitor’s Gate, “Devil Takes the High Road”
“Devil Takes the High Road” was the title track from Traitor’s Gate’s first EP, which would subsequently be the only thing the group put out for another 30-plus years. It actually made sense in a strange way: the track itself was already at least four years behind the NWOBHM curve, so they might as well have taken some three decades to follow it up. And “Devil Takes the High Road” certainly didn’t make any advances to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal sound, though it at least succeeded in delivering a galloping charge with amateurish enthusiasm. There were a ton of songs like this recorded in England between 1979 and 1986, and it would be disingenuous to claim that they didn’t mostly sound alike. But this was also a fun sound that brimmed with unpretentious joy, and as a result offered its own charms.
