garrett matthews was raised in an upper-middle class, happy family. he had a privileged upbringing, access to a quality education, and he didn’t want for anything.
garrett matthews met sutton reyes when they were both juniors in high school. they were the picture perfect high school couple, and they decided to marry while in college at age 21. mackenzie mae matthews was born, roughly, nine months later. after graduation, garrett decided to go to medical school.
at 26-years-old, garrett began in the surgical residency program at nyu. shortly after, his daughter was diagnosed with non-hodgkin’s lymphoma.
while mackenzie was sick, garrett spent every spare moment by her bedside. however, for a surgical resident, this did not amount to a lot of time. he began to fall behind in his residency and receive pressure from his superiors to step it up. this is why garrett agreed to be part of an organ recovery team one evening during his second year of residency. he could not turn down anymore opportunities. it was this night that mackenzie took her last breaths and passed away, without her father at her bedside.
mackenzie’s death broke garrett. he felt tremendous guilt. he had abandoned his daughter for a surgery. sutton couldn’t even look at him. she hated him, and she told him often. she filed for divorce a few months after mackenzie’s funeral.
garrett started off on a long, complicated spiral. he experienced, what could probably be characterized as, a series of depressive episodes. he began binge drinking. he fell further and further down, always resorting to alcohol to drown away his guilt. he probably would have lost everything if his mentor hadn’t eventually pulled him out.
garrett got back on his feet. he dedicated himself to helping other people through his work. he wanted to be the best person he could be--for mackenzie. he started to get his life back together (although he was never able to admit he had a drinking problem...he remains adamant that he is not, nor was he ever, an alcoholic; his problem is ‘under control).
when given the chance, garrett moved to the other side of the country to escape some of his more painful memories. he accepted a fellowship at seattle presbytarian before becoming an attending surgeon at seattle grace.
garrett carries mackenzie with him. he is inspired everyday by his beautiful, courageous, generous child. she is why he is so committed to being the kind and caring man he is. he smiles a lot more now. although, at the end of the day, he always goes home alone.

james has always been interested in cardio surgery, it was his favourite rotation whilst doing his residency.
two years after moving to seattle, james met his now wife natalie, they were married within six months and from the outside their relationship looks pretty good.

About Noah
Noah was born in a small town and didn’t by any means have the best childhood. His parents never really expected him to ever leave because they never did, and for a while thats all he believed he was capable of. That all changed when his brother got into an accident and he saw how the surgeons who were in the hospital that night saved his life. He knew then and there that he wanted to be a surgeon but he knew he had a lot of work to do to reach that particular goal and the road to it wasn’t easy.
In his Senior year of high school he met Isobel Stevens and the spark between them was pretty instantaneous. They were kids in love and didn’t think that there was anything stopping them from reaching their dreams. They were reckless and irresponsible but they justified it with their relationship thinking that they were untouchable together. Izzie ended up getting pregnant and gave the baby up for adoption, and despite knowing for certain that neither of them were ready to be parents at that point in their lives, Noah still regrets and carries around the guilt of having a kid in the world and not trying harder to be in her life.
He went to a smaller, lesser known college for pre-med and cleaned his act up so that he got accepted into Duke for med school and stayed there through his residency. He met Lucy Fields when they were in the same intern group at Duke and they rose through the ranks of their residencies both at the top of their game, and equally competitive with one another spawning a love/hate relationship between them that’s carried on even outside of their internship and residency years whenever they see each other or meet up when they’re in the same city.
After his residency at Duke, Noah moved to New York and did his fellowship at New York Presbyterian and he’s been living in New York ever since. He met Meliha Kaplan, who was doing her fetal surgery fellowship in New York at the same time Noah was doing his cardio fellowship. They started going out and were together for almost a year, getting so serious that Noah was so close to getting down on one knee when their best friend Thomas out of nowhere, beat him to the punch and Mel swiftly ended their relationship. He was never given and explanation and barely got another conversation with Mel or Thomas after that so he pretty much cut ties with them both, moving to Maryland as a cardio attending at Johns Hopkins as soon as his fellowship was over to get away from them both and what he saw as complete betrayal.
He’s moved to Seattle now not knowing that either Izzy or Mel are working in Seattle Grace, he does know that Lucy is working there but as much as they love to hate on each other and are always bickering, he actually thought that moving and working with her again was something that could be considered more of a good thing than a bad one.
