It’s funny how one thing can be two opposing things at the same time isn’t it? Like, the world seems so small…but in truth, it’s SO INCREDIBLY BIG. Right?!

I was fortunate enough to have served in the U.S. Navy and had the opportunity to make stops in several ports all around the world. I remember when I was in Kuwait, I was part of a 10 man detachment that was sent to recover a downed aircraft (aka a broken plane) and repair it so it could make the flight back to the aircraft carrier. The 10 of us ended up being stranded on the Kuwait airbase for a week because we couldn’t get parts. We lived in tents, it was 130 degrees on the black top during the day, we were in the middle of the desert surrounded by a sea of people who spoke a language that I didn’t understand. I never felt so far from home.

On the day that we received the parts that we needed, we repaired our plane and sent it off the runway. We had been briefed before hand and we were told that a helicopter would be fired up (meaning it’s whirley top would be spinning) and as soon as our plane left the ground we were to run like the dickens for said helicopter because it was waiting to take us back the carrier. The timing made it stressful, because with the other flights that were going to be recovered on the carrier, our helicopter had to leave the ground in the next 10 minutes because it had to be the first to land on the carrier..so it was going to leave whether we were on it or not.

So imagine the stress of that, the relief of finally being able to leave the dessert…I start running for the helicopter and my boot lace came untied. No! Terrible timing! I bent down to tie it and heard everyone shouting my name. I knew it was because they were afraid I’d miss my ride back to the boat, but I was afraid I’d trip and bust my face open on the asphalt. So I laced up my boot as quickly as I could and took off running again. But someone was still shouting my name!

I was so confused because the person shouting my name was not in the group of people in front of me…it was coming from behind me. I had to see who it was, so I looked over my shoulder, and I saw a man running towards me waving and flailing his arms shouting my name. When he got close enough that I could see his face, my mouth dropped. It was someone I had gone to school with after boot camp 3 years prior. He was in the Kuwaiti Air Force, and I had no idea what happened to him after graduation. Can I just tell you…it was so strange and disorienting to see a face i recognized from the past when I had been completely in the middle of nowhere! It was at that moment that I realized just how small our world really is.

That being said…every time I look at a map all I see are all of the places that I haven’t been to yet. There are simply too many. And that’s when I’m forced to accept the fact that the world is unfathomably large. There are 196 countries!!! I’ve been to 6. I would have to travel to 5 countries a year for 40 years so see them all!!! That is so crazy to think about! And it makes ITCH to travel! I want to be ready for whatever opportunity comes my way.
