Review: Reiter Travellunch Meatballs and Mash
This is one of my first attempts at a video review and I think it's fair to say I've made a bit of a hash of it.
It was fun while filming it but I think I come across as a crusty old biddy, especially in the section where I've speeded the footage up!
A couple of lessons learnt though, I will spend more time preparing and thinking about my narrative, not to mention trying to kill the 'uhms' off!
As the title says this is a review of the Reiter Travellunch Meatballs and Mash freeze dried meal. I've had several of their meals before and really enjoyed them especially their Chicken Korma, Smokey Bacon, mash and peas and the vegetable risotto which are all simple cases of tear open the pouch, pour in water, stir and leave to hydrate.
Stupidly I didn't check the instructions before buying the meatballs and mash meal so I failed to clock that you have to add water to the meatball mixture, leave for 5 minutes and then form the mixture into patties before frying them.
In itself that's not a problem but my stove is a Primus Eta Express with a 1 litre pot and a lid which acts as a frying pan, a tiny frying pan.
I figured I'd probably fit a maximum of two patties at a time into the pan.
So that's why this review ended up being done at home in my kitchen, narrated in my terribly tweedy, slightly middle England, crusty old biddy voice so if that doesn't put you off go ahead and take a look!
This incidentally is my stove and should illustrate why I didn't contemplate taking this particular meal out with me.
Primus Eta Express stove, 1 litre pot and lid
or a very, very small frying pan!
I actually really like the meal. Reiter have put a lot of thought into it and it contains a decent number of calories for it's weight (125g or 160g with packaging) at 460 Kcal per 100g dry weight. There's a good balance of protein (18.5g), carbohydrates (49.7g) and fat (20.9g) per 100g too.
The meatballs are really tasty and the mash very well seasoned. It is however a little on the dry side as there's no sauce with the meatballs.
It's a delicious, nutritious meal that packs down small, contains no preservatives and weighs next to nothing. What's not to like? I just wish I didn't need to make up the meatballs.
