The hunt was always a delight, especially with her lover, her infected, her Trekx with her. It made the whole experience taste more ... real. They were giggling on their way back - or at least, she was, still giddy from her expended energy. The pack of infected behind them was seething, but they recognized their mister - and her mate.
Vira was leading them down the back alleys of the grid, her knowledge of the backways better than any map could ever manage. She slipped an arm around Trekx's waist, reveling in the touches - safe, now that he was like her. And he returned the motion, an arm sliding around her shoulders as he leaned in closer.
"We might have a better time," he practically breathed in her ear, "if you sent the children away ..."
Vira looked up at him, raising an eyebrow with a smirk before tugging free of his arm to turn on her infected. "C̀háng̴e̷ ̵o͟f͝ p̕l̛anś,͝ da̕rli͟nǵs̛.͠ Y͠o̸u ̨s̶houĺd̵ ̢j̨u̧st ̡he̕a̶d o͝n͟ h̀ome ͞- y̸óu͡'ll̢ ͜f͜iņd̶ a͟ ͠b̡oy̶ th̸e͘r̴e.͜ ͜P̵atch.͢ ͘D͠o͘n'̛t̶ ͘hu̵rt ̴h͜i̶m̵ an͟d͏ ͞ḩe͟'̸ll f̵ee͠d yo̸u͞.̶" The infected hissed excitedly, and Vira grabbed the lead one, pressing the directions into his mind before releasing him. The infected stumbled off in a buzz of excitement and she turned to Trekx, and made it halfway.
It was very hard to move, after all, with a disc protruding through her chest from behind. Her breath caught and her eyes widened as his other arm looped around her throat. He knew, of course, that she couldn’t die immediately, that even this blow might not do it. He knew everything – she’d told him.
“W҉h͞y͟-?” she tried to ask, but he heard her, physically or through their shared coding she couldn’t tell.
“It’s time for new management,” he purred in her ear. “Did you really think I loved you? You had power. The ability to further my functions. And now … you’re of no more use.”
Tunnel vision, she realized dimly. That’s why the edges of the wall in front of her seemed to be turning black. She was going to die here.
“Thanks for the army, love,” he said casually, yanking his disc out and shoving her to the ground. Pixels began to drip from the wound as she gasped, trying to heal – trying to breathe – trying –
She could only pant and watch his boots as he walked away, as she saw pixels drip from her chest, and then her body was shaken with her gasps, and she couldn’t breathe, she had no chest – Trekx was back, he was shaking her shoulder and she struggled to get away for a minute before his words broke through.
“ – and please, Vira, I can’t hold you still, I’m trying to help, don’t - !”He jerked back as her circuits passed dangerously close to his – his uninfected circuits.
A dream. The whole, horrible thing had been a dream. Vira froze, her system panicking before the infection died down, finding nothing to fight. And then she curled up, burying her face in her knees, and took deep breaths until the cramped feeling in her chest vanished.
