One of the first environmental jobs I ever had? An internship at the Triangle Land Conservancy in North Carolina. Their protected areas are stunning - like these golden grasses at Horton Grove.

I am just in love with golden-crowned kinglets. They are curious, active, and so interesting to watch and listen for. I saw these little guys on a trip to the Triangle Land Conservancy's Johnson Mill Nature Preserve on Sunday for my Great Backyard Bird Count trip. They were present all along the river, feeding among the trees and at times landing on the fast-melting snow.
