Trichostema lanatum

This wonderful California native shrub (found also in northern Baja California) is known as "wooly blue curls", in reference to its fuzzy stems, bracts and flowers, plus its purple-blue color, plus its long curling stamens and styles. The look of the plant is reminiscent of a Salvia, and indeed the two genera both belong to the Lamiaceae, or Mint Family.

Trichostema 'Midnight Magic'

This shrub is a hybrid between California's Trichostema lanatum (commonly called wooly blue curls) and the Mexican species Trichostema purpusii. The flowers may not be quite as showy as those of the wooly blue curls, but they keep coming for a large portion of the year, much to the delight of the hummingbirds. Trichostema belongs to the Lamiaceae, or Mint Family.

Trichostema ‘Midnight Magic’

The genus Trichostema is a small group of shrubby plants in the Mint Family (Lamiaceae) native to North America. This one is a hybrid between Trichostema lanatum (native to California and Baja California, and commonly called “wooly blue-curls”) and T. purpusii (from Mexico). Its purple flowers last all through the warm months of the year, often continuing well into the winter.

Trichostema ‘Midnight Magic’

This plant is a hybrid between Trichostema lanatum (a California native known as Wooly Blue Curls) and Trichostema purpusii (from Mexico). Like Wooly Blue Curls, the hybrid has attractive purple flowers, but they are more loosely arranged on an upright stalk. It has a long blooming period over the warmer months, and has a salvia-like appearance, which is not surprising since they are in the same family (Lamiaceae, the Mint Family).
