Picture it! 1935, my grandmother ,Thelma, widowed unexpectly to her first husband, a merchant seaman from India. He made his living transporting spices and goods to Venezuela and other islands. The say privates got a hold of him on one if those trips cause one day he let and was never seen again. My grandmother had two children for him, both young teenagers by the time my grandfather "Christopher" came along. Christopher was a painter, not the kind like me though. He painted houses for a living with the kind of paint that took a year to stop smelling like fumes. He was tall, sharp, a "traveling man" and he'd been watching my grandmother for months. "One day, he got up enough nerve to speak. "Ms Woodly" (he takes off his 🎩) Ah have been watchin yuh from afar and ah know yousah good oman! Ah make 9 cents a day and ah could take care of yuh!" My granny looked keenly at him. With the blessings of her mother and herself, They had a short courtship and married each other soon after. He put his numbers on the table to let her know he was a man that could take care of her, that WANTED to give her a better life. And she already a woman with 2 children! I said, 9 cents a day granny, that's it?!! Yesss, back then it was good money gyal!. We both giggled at....
