Jake finally got home after his school day, his body still very sore from his fight a few days ago. He quietly walked towards his mom's room, finding her reading in bed. "Hey, my friend Trin is coming over. She'll hand me a book for school and maybe stay for dinner? Is that okay?" Gloria nodded, a small smile on her lips. "Yeah, it's no problem, Jacob. There's some leftovers in the fridge, but I'll probably stay in here." She yawned and look at her clock. "I took my meds earlier and I'm kinda tired. Just don't be too loud, okay?" Nodding, Jake left a quick kiss on his mother's forehead and left the room, searching for some Advils as he waited for Trin.
Trinity played with the loose strands of hair that fell from under the hat she was wearing, as she walked to Jake's place. She had been pretty distant from her friends, and it was partially due to her trying to make nice with her aunt. She had even let her aunt straighten her hair. Something she thought she'd never do. But she realized the other day, when she passed Jake in the hallway, and he didn't say anything, and he had a black eye, that something was up with him. But work had been keeping her busy, since they were understaffed at the Bean so she hadn't gotten the chance to check up on him. She was more than grateful when he texted her about borrowing a book for his English class. Not only did it give her a reason to see about what was going on with him, but it was the first time in a long time that she'd be around someone that she actually gave a damn about. Once she got to his front door, she knocked three times then pulled her hat further down over her ears to try and block out the cold.
Jake was gulping down the three pills when he heard the three small knocks on his front door, and run to open the door to his friend. "Hey there." With a small smile on his lips, he let her in, carefully closing the door behind her. "Hey thanks for coming. I could've come and get it at your place, you know?"
Trinity didn't return Jake's smile, but entered his home, to escape the cold. "Nah, Sugar's dad said no boys.. Plus, I don't mind waking." she shrugged, and pushed the sleeves up on her jacket, finally looking up at his face. "Are you gonna tell me what happened to your eye?"
Jake shook his head, scoffing. "Yeah, I had a good day. Thanks for asking, Trin." He started to walk towards the kitchen, motionning to Trin to follow him. "Do you want anything to drink?"
Trinity fought the urge to roll her eyes as she followed him, and pulled her hat off of her head, subconsciously raking her fingers through her hair. "No thank you... And I don't know if you realized it or not, but you didn't answer my question."
Jake turned around, a bit taken aback to find Trin with her hair straighten. "Your hair? It looks... good." Frowning, he filled his glass with water, his eyes fixed on his friend. "It's pretty, but I don't know... it's not Trinity." He gulped a bit of his beverage, shrugging slightly. "I hope you won't take this the wrong way. I mean, it's really cool." Jake took another sip of his water, and shook his head, a small smile on his lips. "I realized it."
Trinity furrowed her eyebrows when he mentioned her hair, then realized that it was still straightened, and shrugged. "Thanks... I think. My aunt did it." she said frowning a little at her friend's weird behavior. Something wasn't right with him. "You realized it, and you still didn't answer me... Am I missing something here?"
Jake shrugged a bit too hard and winced in pain, but tried his best to hide it from Trin as he walked over to the dishwasher. "You're not missing anything. I mean, you're never opening to me, so...." He chuckled dryly as he placed his glass in the machine. "It's only a black-eye. No big deal."
Trinity shook her head and quickly placed her hat back on her head, preparing herself to leave. "Y'know what... You're right, so, um.. I'm just gonna leave your book on the couch or something and go." she said turning out of the kitchen while moving one of the straps of her back pack off of her shoulder.
Jake sighed, reaching for her hand. "Wait, Trin!" When she turned around, he cleared his throat and looked at the ground. "Look, I'm sorry. It's just... you're always shutting me out, and now when I'm doing it... it's not okay?"
Trinity "Look, no one punched me in the eye... Besides, the shit I'm dealing with isn't worth talking about, so I keep it to myself." she mumbled, removing her hand from his grip and going into her bag for the copy of the Great Gatsby that she brought for him to borrow. Once she found it, she held it out towards him, and looked at it, hoping he'd just take it and she could go before things got too umcomfortable.
Jake rolls his eyes, shaking his head slightly, trying not to give himself any kind of dizzyness. "Yeah, but it's not important either, okay? I made a mistake, so I'm rocking the black-eye for a few days." He crossed his arms on his chest, glancing at the book in her hands. "You're trying to run away from me, aren't you?"
Trinity "Someone punched you in the face and it ain't important? okay.. It is really time for me to go.." she said a little louder than she intended, "And I'm not runnin' away, I'm trying to give you the book you said you needed to borrow. Do you want it or not?"
Jake "Yes, I want it." He sighed, extending his hand to take the book in her hands. "I just don't get why you're so stubborn about this! It's only a black-eye, for God's sake! It's not important. I did a foolish thing, and now I'm paying the price. That's it!" He let out a deep breath and cursed at himself, feeling his blood rishing to his head because of his yelling. He placed his free hand on his forehead, trying to soothe the incoming pain.
Trinity chuckled watching Jake surrender to the pain that showed that the black eye was only part of whatever shit he had gotten himself into. "You know what.. fuck it Puckerman. Take the book and keep it.. I'm going home." she muttered, pushing the book against his chest. She turned toward the door pulling her hat down over her ears, and fixed her jacket so that she could walk home and not freeze too badly.
Gloria frowned, placing the book she was currently reading on her nightstand, slowly standing up from her bed. Jacob and his friend were making a lot of noise in the kitchen, and she wanted to make sure that everything was under control. When she arrived, she spotted Trinity with her coat and hat still on, looking somewhat annoyed. Or angry. Clearing her throat, Gloria walked closer to the two teens. "Everything okay, there?"
Trinity turned around after hearing Jake's mom ask if everything was okay. She quickly threw a small smile onto her face, and tried to hide any lingering annoyance that was present. "Uh, yes ma'am... I was just getting ready to go. Sorry if I disturbed you."
Gloria chuckled softly, placing her hand on the younger girl's shoulder, a small smile on her lips. "Oh come on, Trinity. It's time for dinner anyway. We have some spaghetti leftovers, and there's more than enough for you." Motionning for Trin to take off her coat, she walked towards the fridge. "And it's really cold outside. Jacob will drop you off after we all eat, okay?"
Jake smiled at his mother's antics, reaching over to take Trin's stuff and put them in the closet. Turning his head slightly towards his mom, "Mama, go rest a bit. I'll take care of dinner."
Gloria nodded, a small smile creeping on her lips. "Thank you, Jacob. I'll go finish my book. I'm almost at the end, and I want to know if the heroine finally gets out of that mess!" She chuckled softly and placed a kiss on Jake's forehead before looking at Trinity. "Isn't he wonderful? I can believe he's single." Gloria shook her head and walked towards her room. "Let me know when dinner's ready."
Trinity tucked some hair behind her ear and tried her best not to laugh at what Ms. Gloria had said. Once she was sure that she was back in her bedroom, Trin looked over at Jake and raised an eyebrow at him. "Your mom is... Something else."
Jake 's face spotted a stupid grin as he looked over at Trinity, his cheeks on fire. "Yeah. But she's the greatest mom anyway." Chuckling softly, he walked over to the fridge, taking the tomato sauce that was already in a bowl. "Could you take a casserole, please? And fill it with water? I'll take care of the sauce while you do that."
Trinity "She's a lot better than my mom.. That's for sure." she admitted shrugging, then walking into the kitchen to help him fix the food.
Jake bit his bottom lip as he walked over to his friend's side, sighing. He frowned, placing the plastic bowl in the microwave, setting the time. "Yeah... Did you talk to her recently?" Crossing his arms on his chest, he leaned on the counter, glancing at Trinity by his left.
Trinity glanced at Jake out of the corner of her eye and frowned at his question. "I don't talk to my mom." she answered plainly, before moving over to the sink to fill the pot in her hand with water.
Jake nodded, biting his bottom lip. Moving closer to Trin, he cleared his throat, staring at her while she was carefully placing the pan on the oven. "I'm sorry. For earlier. Didn't meant to snap at you, or anything."
Trinity turned on the oven and took a step away from her friend "Don't worry about it. I'll be alright." she shrugged, looking up at him. "People have done and said way worse to me."
Jake frowned when she moved away, but didn't say anything, reaching for a spoon to mix the spaghetti sauce. "I know, but still. I had no right." Offering her a crooked smile, he opened the door of the microwave and blended the tomato mixture. A bit too strong. Spotting the stain on his shirt, he chuckled softly and replaced the bowl in the microwave and started the timer once again. "Just give me a minute. I'll go change." Smiling, he turned on his heels, taking off his shirt as he went back to his room.
Trinity rolled her eyes internally, looked down at her hands and kept quiet as Jake continued to explain himself. She wasn't gonna tell him a million times that it wasn't a big deal. She looked up once he started talking, noticing a spot on his shirt. Before she could say anything he was already making his way out of the room, and he was pulling his shirt over his head. "Does he always do that?" she mumbled to herself, walking out of the kitchen. She took a seat on the couch and took her phone out of her pocket and began to play a game, as she waited for Jake to come back out from where he left off to.
Jake got into his room, searching for a new shirt to put on, humming absently. Finding none, he went over to the washing machine, placing the stained shirt in it as he looked into the dryer for the shirt he wanted, before taking it and carefully putting it on, trying to avoid his still sore chest. Walking over to the kitchen, and finding it empty, Jake frowned and called out for his friend. "Trin?"
Trinity looked up from her phone and got up from the couch. She walked back into the kitchen and leaned against the door frame. "I'm here." she said sticking her phone back in her pocket.
Jake turned around, a small smile on his face. "Oh hey." He cleared his throat and went back to the pasta, checking if they were ready. "So... you feel like watching a movie after dinner?"
Trinity "Sure.. I might do some homework while the movie is playing, but I don't mind." she said, shrugging. "Is the food almost done?" she asked, looking up at him, curiously.
Jake chuckled, turning off the oven before getting down on one knee to grab a strainer. "Aren't you impatient?" Placing it in the sink, he took the pan and emptied his contents. "Well, I just place it in the plates, but it's ready."
Trinity shrugged at his laugh and walked further into the kitchen. To be honest, she wasn't hungry but she needed to eat a good meal. "You need any help?"
Jake grabbed three plates and placed them on the counter before turning his head towards Trin. "Well, I'll take care of that, do you maybe want to grab us something to drink? And we could eat while watching a movie? What do you think?"
Trinity nodded and grabbed three cups, then went into the fridge and pulled out something for everyone to drink and closed the refrigerator. She pushed her phone deeper into her pocket, and ran a free hand through her hair. "You want me to go get your mom?"
Jake frowned, wondering if Gloria wanted to share dinner with them. A part of him wanted to enjoy his lunch with the two ladies, but he knew that if his mom joined them, Trin would witness her taking her various pills. And he was not ready for that. "I'll go ask her if she wants to eat with us. You can place the drinks in the living room. And you can choose the movie, I don't mind."
Trinity "Alright.." she said forgetting about the drinks and walking back into the living room, to take a quick look at the dvd's, trying to find something that everyone would be okay with watching. "This is gonna be weird as shit..." she thought to herself, picking out something random and placing it on top of the tv.
