It was supposed to be a special day. Trinity had taken a day off, swore that nothing could drag her to the Emergency Department of Pittsburgh. And you two had gone to bed believing the idea, trusting the plans you had made would be fulfilled. Limbs tangled together, Trinity's body encapsulating yours, as slumber took over your consciousness for the night. You had both turned off every alarm in the house, closed the door to make sure the cat wouldn't wake you up and informed Denis to not be noisy when he left for the forbidden place.
Just as expected, the sun rays passed through the translucent curtains and made your eyelids scrunch. You stretched, awaiting the warmth of your resting girlfriend beside you. But as you went to wrap back around her, her side was empty and cold already. This situation felt like a bad dream, your eyes opened in a quick blink and a frown of eyebrows. You reluctantly stepped out from under the covers, the clock claiming 10:27AM. A part of you hoped that Trinity was simply up early, making breakfast or feeding your fur ball. A nightdress on, short enough to please the eyes, you walked around the apartment. Only to find it as empty as the bed. No post-it about some errands to run. No surprise in sight. Not even the sound of a breakfast toast.
Understandingly annoyed, you tried to ring your girlfriend's phone. Once then thrice, in vain. Probably turned off. And so, you could guess where she stood at the moment.
You walked circles in the living room as you called friends and family to cancel plans while ranting about the whole situation. Your bad luck started here, early morning, anger fueling you, with the couch's feet and your own hitting each other. You let out flowery words, hands letting your phone hit the wood flooring. Your anger bubbling under the makeshift facade you held while your friend on speaker asked if you were fine. "How can I be okay when my girlfriend sort of abandoned me on our day off we had planned for months?!" you wanted to scream at the empty, but settled on a simple "Yeah, just hit my feet against the fucking couch."
You calmed down, a bit by doing chores to focus your mind, but your day didn't seem to get any better. While trying to clean the laundry, you hit the closet door. As you cleaned the floor, you slipped on the wet tiles, a soft thump disturbing the otherwise silent rooms. You tried to cook yourself some lunch, only to nip your finger against the knife. "Takeout it is," left your mouth with a defeated sigh.
You had ordered some cheap food from a nearby restaurant. Something warm and heavy on the stomach to ease the leftover disappointment. Some TV show you don't exactly care about sitting in the background, filling the room with noises, until the notification saying your delivery is at the entrance of the building.
Wearing a nice pair of tights while running down the tiled stairs might have been a bad idea, but you realize that only once you've fallen down a few dozen of steps. Pain filled your body as you tried to pull yourself up. You could see bruises at your elbows and you could imagine there was more under your clothes. You hissed as you tried to force yourself up, hands on the rails for support. It was useless, all weight put on your ankle would just bring you back down.
A neighbor who had heard the fall hurried to your side. You shared the pain around your ankle as they tried to help you stand. Playing it safe, they drove you to the Emergency of the nearest hospital. More than half way through the trip, you gasped, "Stop the car! You can't bring me to Pittsburgh!" Your demand stayed unfulfilled, the other person too worried about your state and also questioning if you had managed to hit your head. As soon as you were brought through the doors and sat in a wheelchair, you tried to make yourself small. Every doctor and intern there at already seen you once and god you did not want to worry Trinity. Especially on the job, nobody wants to see her anxious over the stress of performing medicine.
Head down, arms wrapped around your chest and as quiet as possible while being drove to Chairs. You begged mentally to not be given to Dr Javadi or Dr McKay. In vain. You looked up through your lashes, only to be met with the older resident looking at your chart. You bit your lips as Cassie called your name before asking what could have possibly happened?
"Fell down the stairs," your nose scrunched under your furrowed brows, "Don't tell Santos I'm here." A simple ask, keeping someone from knowing her clumsy as hell girlfriend has ended in the hospital should be realistic. Not in Pittsburgh. Not with the loose lips on shift.
You waited for the ankle brace to be brought over to you. A fracture of the fibula Dr. McKay had explained. Around 12 weeks to heal, just need to be careful with the weight and efforts. Scrolling through your phone, barely putting your head up when the curtains to the bed you sat on we're pulled aside. You realized too late, when the sound reached your ears. "What are you doing here?" Trinity. You swung left to right on the bed, looking at the ceiling and pretending that it was all good. She called your name back, getting you to finally look at her, "What kind of troubles have you gotten into?"
"Dennis?"
"A little birdie told me," Santos simply answered. Most people loved gossip, no reason to point fingers. She sat beside you on the bed with a sigh. Taking off her stethoscope and leaving it aside, she let you lean against her.
"I'm mad at you," you whispered, head resting on your girlfriend's shoulder, "Like really mad. Like you'll-sleep-on-the-couch mad."
"It was an emergency."
"It's always an emergency."
Trinity sighed loudly, wrapping an arm around your shoulders, "Looks like you're my emergency right now." It was a stupid remark, internally you were already scolding yourself for smiling at such an idiotic try to lighten up your mood.
A few moments passed, not a muscle had moved. Silently, you were staring, trying to telepathically share your anger, your sadness and your disappointment. You were not born with such a gift, you simply hoped your body was following your brain. Trinity was the first to change position, squeezing your shoulder. "I'm a big girl you know? I don't need you to treat me like a kid getting a shot," you said with a small voice.
"I know. A big big girl. You don't even need me around to get hurt." You immediately threw your elbow back, lodging it against her ribs in a soft kick.
"Not a laughing matter," you almost shouted. You brought your uninjured leg to your chest, wrapping your arms around it with a pout. "But at least I got a way to keep you close now."
Santos tilted her head, her eyebrows raised in confusion. If this wasn't a professional setting, you two would have been on the couch, Trinity's head resting against your lap. You could imagine that scene happen quite regularly in the next few weeks.
"You got a very hurt girlfriend who needs constant attention and love and care and uhhh…" you dramatically put a hand on your forehead, feigning some loss of consciousness like the actor did in those historical shows you watched together on some Sundays, "and a lot of hugs and kisses."
"Is that so?"
"Mmhhhh… Yeah. My ankle is ruined, I like cannot walk. Dr McKay's words," hands put in the air to innocent yourself. Doctor's orders, not even the sassy Trinity could fight back against that.
Despite your huge exaggeration, she shook her head, laughing out loud, her head thrown back, "You're trying to trap me at home with a broken ankle?"
"Maybe? Am I pretty enough to do it despite having fallen down a few floors?"
"You're always the prettiest," the doctor said, putting a soft kiss over your forehead, and another on your cheek before settling a last one on the corner of your lips, "Maybe I can stay home for a few weeks. Claim to be sick. Cough a lot. Especially on Denis."
You chuckled, taking her hand in yours and allowing the gentle rub of your knuckles, "I forgive but only you if you cook everyday. And everyday, we'll eat my favorite foods."
"If we manage to save a few avocados from Huckleberry's grip," a roll of Trinity's eyes followed the comment. That sort of somewhat snarky comments from her always brought a smile to your face. A hum answered this sentence while you closed your eyes. You would have basked in the sweet silence for a few more moment if you were given the choice, unfortunately you weren't. The curtains to your bed were pulled open again. You tensed your whole body, forcing a smile before separating your body from the warmth of your lover.
Cassie threw a look that screamed "Am I disturbing something?" that you answered with a simple shrug of shoulders. With a soft pout, you let her wrap the plaster bands around your ankle, creating the cast you'd be forced to wear for the sake of your own recovery. Then, she left you two 'lovebirds', as she had just said, alone.
"I'll help her find the way to the break room," Trinity said, helping you step off the bed. She wrapped an arm around your chest, carrying a part of your weight. She seated you, her fingers tangled with strands of your hair, slowly stroking them back. She settled a kiss, lips on your forehead. "Just let me finish today. Then I'm home with you."
"Okay but you leave early." Not a question, not an ask with a gentle tone and puppy eyes, but a command, almost an order. And Santos was not one to disobey her dear sweet girl. "Please, you weren't even supposed to be here." She rested her forehead against yours, a slow and soft nod. Trinity then covered your face with a few more kisses as her hands cradled your cheeks, a simple way to ask for forgiveness once again despite knowing she did not deserve it much.
She parted, with great sadness, her hands from your face. Your cheeks were warm from her attention, but you desired more and knew you could only get it home, away from the chaos of the Emergency Department. You nodded back, lips curling in an understanding grin. She reciprocated the emotion, "I'll remind Robby I was supposed to be off." A soft promise that she would fight for her right to leave without doing overtime charting that hang while she closed the break room's door behind her.
The two hours you spent awaiting her in the room, basically abandoned if it wasn't for the kind Dana checking on you under Trinity's demands, were long and particularly boring. The head nurse was a sweet lady, she had great conversation but it wasn't what you needed in the moment. You wanted cuddles. Kisses. Hands held together. Maybe even squeezed softly. Arms around your waist. Well, you wanted to be cared for by your overworked darling. So you were pouting, despite what Dana tried to make you smile, even if it meant giving up on some pudding.
Your smile only came back when your light was back. She sighed but nodded. "I'm free. Finally." And your cheeks warmed up from a slight impatience of all the sweet moments you would now freely share. "For a whole week at least." Just the two of you with so much to do and catch up on. You couldn't wait.
Author note: ⟡ I have been working on this fic for way too long but I struggled to bring events and to formate my dialogue to feel not too cringe and written. :(
