On February 16, 1786, James Monroe—almost thirty years prior to becoming President of the United States—was married at Trinity Church by Trinity’s then-rector, Benjamin Moore. Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth Kortright, were married at Trinity after having met while Monroe served on the Continental Congress, which met in New York, our newly founded nation’s capital at that time. Monroe would later serve two terms as President of the United States from 1817 to 1825. #trinityhistory #archives
