I should be cleaning my apartment, instead I'm thinking about Trions and gender identity. I feel like my brain is being wrapped around a Moebius strip trying to express this properly.
I've decided that the Trions [or any other species actually, I just started this off by thinking about Turlough] could have some sort of analogous, but not truly equivalent, system of identifying (and classifying) people into certain groups, but it's not close enough to gender to make complete sense to someone, like a human, who's used to our way of thinking about things. The way people are categorized (or categorize themselves) may very well have to do with genitalia or self-identification, as humans do, but there are at least several other parameters involved. It might even have to do with degrees.
Perhaps their system is a quite common system of thinking about identity throughout certain parts of the universe. Perhaps there have been other companions who have grown up in this sort of system, but due to translation conventions, they don't realize it until quite a ways down the road. Perhaps, in the same way that we know there are people who use Celsius and people who use Fahrenheit, this system is known by certain humans (Jack, most likely), and the species that use this system know about the human idea of gender. Maybe it doesn't sit well with everyone, but, like trying to quickly convert the temperature off the top of your head, you can get close enough to make yourself understood.
