Trouble-Shooting for Citrus

This potted Makrut Lime was struggling a little from a few years of neglect. It’s a beautiful tree with lovely scented leaves that are great for cooking, and although the fruit isn’t really for eating, the bees and beneficial insects love the flowers! I gave it a bit of care just recently as the weather has begun to warm up and it has been rewarding me with new growth ever since!

The few main things I did to give it a little help along were:

Pest control: I used white oil (I’ll post a recipe soon) to combat a fairly rampant case of scale. Scale are small pests that draw sap from the leaves, branches and trunks of plants and stunt their ability to thrive. 

Weeding: As citrus have quite a shallow root system they suffer if they are met with competition, so I removed a fairly heavy carpet of weeds from around its base. 

Pruning: The tree growth was very dense with branches growing in towards the trunk and overlapping a lot. Citrus need good air circulation throughout, and the scale was thriving in the hidden spots where air and light wasn’t able to enter. To fix this I gave the tree a heavy prune taking about a third of the foliage away, removing any branches growing inward, and opening up the centre of the tree.

Fertilising: As a fruiting plant citrus need heavy feeding and this one had not been fed for years, so I added a layer of dynamic lifter to the soil. Next time I fertilise I’ll use a citrus-specific fertiliser.

Replenishing Soil: The pot had not been added to for many years and due to breakdown in the soil it had begun to expose some of the roots. I added a small top layer of premium potting mix on the surface to compensate.

Mulching: To reduce weeds and help to retain moisture, I added a generous layer of mulch (made from palm fronds on site).

Watering: Plenty of water!

The initial layout of my website was complicated and a bit too busy. Instead of having the each of our outfits displayed side by side I had decided to have two separate tabs open so that the viewer could have more freedom. This idea meant that with each different style they clicked a new tab would open, and in the end there would be (at least) 20 tabs open... I can improve this by having each style open into a post with our two different interpretations side-by-side for comparison. 

Another problem I had was that the individual silhouettes were too big and therefore when they were being displayed the click through links (via image mapping) were not in the right place.
