Venus: Over the course of several years, starting in 2011, Danish filmmakers Mette Carla Albrechtsen and Lea Glob had recurring open casting calls for young women to come forward to talk about their sexual experiences, fears, and sense of fulfillment. The result of this fascinating experiment is a document not just of the women’s sexuality, but also the vast gulf between desire and intimacy. For many of the women, sex is a continuous struggle to be heard and respected by their partners – as well as being fulfilled: In the film’s most harrowing exchange, women are asked how many of their partners brought them to orgasm, one says “6 of 32” and another says “2 of 21” – while coping with their own issues of shame, guilt, and self-condemnation. Thankfully, not all is lost: One young woman happily beams about finally having her first boyfriend; another describes a powerful, leather-clad sexual exchange between her and a girlfriend;, and one former stripper describes the power she discovered in the lust she could generate in her audience. The film’s coup de grace, however, is when the directors ask the women to disrobe to their own level of comfort for a video portrait. Many of the subjects go completely bare, staring back at the camera with a kind of graceful defiance. The female gaze reflected back upon itself.

For the next three days, I will be in sunny Columbia, MO, enjoying the fantastic True/False festival, amongst the buskers, Queue Queens, art installations, and wildly enthusiastic crowds, taking in a range of documentaries both fraught and hopeful.

True False - Negativland

Negativland's 2019 album True False is a fascinating electronic/sound collage album. The album was described by Jon Leidecker 'Wobbly' as a "lost Negativland album" in the documentary Stand By For Failure. It discusses things about social inequality, technology, etc. Having listened to a performance of an early version of True False from 2000 that was uploaded to YouTube and I am glad that this was created later than the original 2000 version, but sad that two members passed away and were not around to see it completed. My favorite song is Certain Men.
