The body is not just a tool for attacking enemies or shocking the public—though it serves both of these eminently rhetorical purposes—it is also a source of the Cynic's authority, his warrant for engaging in parrhēsia. He uses it as a visible expression of his exemption from social control, of his immunity to doxa or public opinion: it confers on his conduct the sanction of nature. Diogenes' willingness to live with his body in public view, his refusal to hide or disguise the bodily functions conventionally deemed strictly private or obscene, is the clearest example of his commitment to Cynic freedom—'to use any place for any purpose.'

In today's world we are taught to fear the truth, to believe it always hurts. We are encouraged to see honest people as naive, as potential losers. Bombarded with cultural propaganda ready to instill in all of us the notion that lies are more important, that truth does not matter, we are all potential victims. Consumer culture in particular encourages lies. Advertising is one of the cultural mediums that has most sanctioned lying. Keeping people in a constant state of lack, in perpetual desire, strengthens the marketplace economy.

A woman in love with another woman is revolution’s revolution: it is not an act of war. it is not an act of desperation. it is not an act of fear. it is - it always has been and it always, always will be - an act of love.
