The after-church tea eventually came to a close, the various women parting ways to attend to their daily duties. Lucile's social blunders were seemingly forgotten, the lie perfectly nestled into place. Josephine and Lucile had managed to experience a semblance of a normal social gathering.
But reality came crashing down when they returned home—well, when they returned to camp. There was no home to speak of, just an empty, waterlogged, bug-filled field.
The wind howled like a feral beast, driving the rain sideways and turning the ground into a treacherous mire.
Lucile’s breath came in short, sharp gasps. "We can...," she panted, fighting against the relentless onslaught of the storm.
"Lucile—"
"Just a bit further," Lucile urged, her voice lost in the wind’s howl. "We can make it!"
"LUCILE DOYLE!" Josephine's voice was a thunderclap, cutting through the storm’s fury.
Lucile stumbled, nearly slipping on the rain-slicked bridge. Turning back, she saw Josephine, cradling her belly, clutching the railing for balance, her face a mask of pain.
"I—" Josephine’s breaths were ragged. "I can't."
Lucile's heart pounded with a mix of fear and determination. She hurried back to Josephine's side. "What's wrong?"
"I just... need to... catch my breath," Josephine gasped, her voice strained.
"The baby is so heavy…"
A lightning bolt split the sky, illuminating Josephine’s pale face. "Get on, Josie. I'll carry you!"
"You can't carry me! I'll crush you!"
"No, no, it's okay!" Lucile insisted, her voice urgent. "I have to get you and the baby out of this weather!"
Josephine hesitated, then carefully climbed onto Lucile's back. "I'm strong enough, promise," Lucile reassured, though her muscles protested with every step.
Lucile groaned under the weight but pushed forward. "Left... right... straight...," she mentally mapped their route, each step sinking deeper into the mud.
"Right... left..."
The mud clung to her heels, dragging her down. Another crack of lightning, followed by a deafening thunderclap, spurred her on.
"Change of plans." Lucile muttered through gritted teeth.
Quiet day.

The Kiss
Fireworks have nothing on this feeling.
I’d have expected his skin to feel soft, but who am I kidding, this is someone who’s spent just as much time surviving the jungle as me. It’s rough under my touch, and still warm from the heatwave of the day.
I know it’s only about to get warmer.
