Why you should read it:
This story stays with you. It focuses on the relationship between Queen Guinevere and her second son Gwydre, giving us glimpses that are absolutely thoughtful and endearingly real. What I noticed while reading it again for the review is how actually similar Gwydre’s personality is to Arthur’s, what I’d imagine Arthur’s personality might have been like as a child. In this way, the author seems to reenact the relationship Arthur never had with Igraine. The story is rich with references to the legend and the show’s history, such as the names and destines of the young princes, Merlin’s relationship with them, the story’s flower motif and a particularly heartbreaking allusion to a moment from series one. A Mother’s Love is brilliantly moving and worth revisiting.
