Happy Birthday ♏️ to and remembering the “Crown Prince of The Crying Jag” Rowland S. Howard (October 24, 1959 - December 30, 2009) R.I.P. 🖤🥀💔 I just can’t say enough about Rowland S. Howard to give him the credit he deserves. There are a few esteemed artists who I hold up very high in standards of cutting edge style of songwriting with distinct tones and sound who have influenced me and the many other artists I respect. He is one that meets such criteria. I recently wrote about first seeing Nick Cave with The Birthday Party at the Roxy in 1983 and how I was left with such an indelible impression of him and the band and especially Rowland S. Howard. Armed with a Fender Jaguar and a Twin Reverb, his style was so fiercely passionate with a unique raunchy and discordant gutter blues essence that utilized intermittent and sporadic rhythmic percussive strokes drenched in dreamy and decadent reverb accompanied by squeals and howling feedback. He has such a phenomenal body of work and collaborations with some of my favorite artists like Lydia Lunch and Nikki Sudden. He wrote his first song at the age of 16 titled “Shivers” during his stint with Young Charlatans in Melbourne’s underground scene before joining Mick Harvey and Nick Cave in their band The Boys Next Door in 1978 who became The Birthday Party in 1980 after they moved to London. After they imploded and dissolved he moved onto Crime & the City Solution who had an appearance in the German romantic fantasy Wings of Desire and then These Immortal Souls with his brother Harry Howard and Epic Soundtracks. Eventually two amazing solo releases Teenage Snuff Film in 1999 and Pop Crimes in 2009. I especially love the cover of “Some Velvet Morning” with Lydia Lunch. Gone way too soon when he had so much more to offer. 🖤🔥🔪 🏴☠️ 🏴☠️ 🏴☠️ #RowlandSHoward #YoungCharlatans #TheBoysNextDoor #TheBirthdayParty #TuffMonks #CrimeAndTheCitySolution #TheseImmortalSouls #LydiaLunch #NikkiSudden #WingsOfDesire #TeenageSnuffFilm #PopCrimes #PostPunk https://www.instagram.com/p/CGvSORQhbaz/?igshid=s1a4rbmoip26
