Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection (1970)

On this day—October 30th, 1970—Tumbleweed Connection, the third studio album by Elton John, was released. A concept album based around Americana and country and western themes, Tumbleweed Connection was written and recorded before John and writing partner Bernie Taupin had ever visited the US. A success out of the gate, the record peaked at number two in the UK and at number five in the US, despite the fact that no singles from the album were issued in either country. Now recognized as one of John’s best works, the meandering, mesmerizing album plays like a great soundtrack for a western that was never filmed. On John’s Farewell Tour of 2002-03, only one non-single was on the nightly playlist—“Burn Down the Mission,” the tenth and final track from the album.
