Our guide to the six best turntables under £400.
PRO-JECT ESSENTIAL 2 - PRICE: £ 199
The Pro-ject Essential 2 provides good sonic performance range, enhanced by the external belt transmission that consistently reduces mechanical noises. The design is nice, though not always user friendly as you will find out when trying to fit the belt around the platter. But once you get it spinning there is no looking back. The arm's skating force is stabilised with a very simple weight system. Overall this turntable offers very good value for money.
MUSIC HALL MMF 2.2 - PRICE from £ 350
The very essential design makes this turntable practical and easy to use. But don't be deceived, this is a great runner, built with strong components: a metal tonearm, metal alloy platter, high quality RCA gold connectors and rubber feet. The finishing is very nice, smooth and elegant and it comes with its own branded cartridge, not the best on the market, but a good starter. Available in different colours including a Ferrari-red version.
NAD C556 - PRICE from £ 250
Taking the best from the original Rega RP1, and giving it not much of an update, as you might not want to change a winning product. If the RP1 was already a stunning performer, this turntable really does makes you wish to spin and spin all day long. Minimal design, high standard components and finishing, a crisp and clean sound experience, make the NAD C566 a true mojo.
DENON DP-300F - PRICE from £280
This is one for the lazies: a fully automatic turntable from Denon, a Japanese brand best known for their hi-fi audio components. This is a solid, belt-driven, reliable spinner with a built-in preamp, which means that you can plug and play without having to rely on a specific phono pre-amp input. It comes with a decent cartridge and the overall sound experience is great. You need to trust these guys, they have been producing home audio systems since 1977.
AUDIO TECHNICA AT-LP5 - PRICE £330
This is a plug and play with built-in USB port, award-winning turntable, that will make you turn your head. Audio Technica is best-known for producing lookalike cheaper versions of the Technics SL 1200, but in recent years they have upped their game. This new entry is a very well designed turntable, equipped with their trademark direct transmission and supported by a J shaped tonearm for perfect alignment. It provides overall smooth and noiseless listening and easy connectivity.
Debut Carbon Phono USB - PRICE £399
This is carbon fibre box turntable from Pro-Ject, one of the most reliable and appreciated turntable manufacturers in the world. It comes with an Ortofon 2m Red cartridge (worth over £ 80). Sounds as good as it looks, if not better. With solid, simple design, USB port and 7 different colours to choose from, the Debut is a real winner. We really loved this one.
U-TURN ORBIT BASIC - PRICE form £150
We kept the the cheapest on our list for last. If you where still hoping to cut down on your budget and have not yet found anything to choose from, this little gem should really do it for you. With an external belt drive installed to cut cost and maximise efficiency, a nice acrylic platter and a well balanced tonearm, this is a simple yet functional solution for playing your vinyl, with a sound quality that can compete with higher priced products.
