A Page from the Drawing Papers Archive
This page from Drawing Papers 105 features Sea Turtle Cup, a drawing made with graphite on paper by Ken Price in 1969.
This drawing was featured in Slow and Steady Wins the Race, a 2014 exhibition that marked the first survey of drawings by Ken Price - an artist best known for his ceramic sculptural work- and chronicled his 50 year pursuit of the drawing medium.
For Price, drawing, much like dreaming on paper, was a way to germinate ideas without having to worry about how they might actually get made. One of the first objects Price tackled in clay, the cup, was also one of the first subjects that he thoroughly explored through drawing. When he drew cups he was able to do things he could not do in clay, and the results are remarkably subtle, full of whimsy and implied movement.
The Drawing Papers are a series of publications documenting The Drawing Center’s exhibitions and public programs and providing a forum for the study of drawing. For more information about Drawing Papers 105, click here.
