Something strange is happening to me.
Precisely 4 decades after picking up my first guitar, and spending 3.996 (99.9%) of those decades playing solely on the neck pickup of any guitar that I picked up...I am suddenly completely enamoured by, and totally OBSESSED with, the sound of bridge pickups!
And this is the guitar I credit with helping me see (hear?) the light. 2018 Gibson Custom 1957 Les Paul Junior VOS, acquired earlier this year from my friend @tomgibson3783.
Maybe it's because I spent the first 3 decades of my guitar life owning just Stratocasters, but I have always stayed away from the bridge pickup, because I felt the sound was too thin for my (inept) playing. But this guitar doesn't sound that way at all...the pickup is full and round sounding. It's fat, but still has the "bite" that you can't get from a neck pickup. It's very satisfying to play.
And it has encouraged me to try (and enjoy) playing the bridge pickups more on my other guitars. So far, I'm really enjoying my R9's "Wizz" bridge pickup, as well as the bridge pickups on my Nighthawks and Les Paul Special.
But the real test will be if I can get a good sound out of a Strat bridge! Wish me luck on that one... 😉
