First I have to say that the actress who played Mildred playing Joy (“Joyful Joy”) did a wonderful job and was an absolute joy to watch!
It must be so painful for Hecate, to see who she could have been--especially when who she could have been is very similar to who Mildred will most likely become. Mildred is so much like Hecate, except that she’s getting to live this life that Hecate never had and always, deep down, wanted.
I hope this season ends with a fieldtrip outside Cackle’s to get ice cream.
I noticed Hecate called Indigo “Miss Moon” when she stood up dramatically at the picnic (reminding me of Mildred standing up in Constance’s class that one time and Constance being like “yes, well, sit down”) and I can think of a variety of different reasons behind this.
“Miss Moon” sounds like “Miss Mould” who notably gave up her magic last year, and Hecate wants Indigo to give up her magic
Hecate is attempting to distance herself from Indigo more, she can no longer bear to say her first name
If Indigo hadn’t been turned to stone for thirty years, she could have been a teacher alongside Hecate at this point and would have the title of “Miss Moon”
Hecate was accepted into a potions summer camp. What if those summer camps took place at Cackle’s? And what if the reason behind this is actually Hecate herself? Because she was an exceptional potions student, Cackle’s decided to start hosting the potion summer camps in the summer? This would explain why in the very first episode of this version of the worst witch, Esmerelda tastes an invisibility potion gone wrong made by a second year.
I felt really bad for Mildred at the end of this episode. I can see why Hecate was so upset, but this entire situation is really unfair to Mildred. She’s trying to solve the problems of her emotionally damaged Deputy Headmistress, and she really shouldn’t be burdened with that weight. We can see how much it’s taking it’s toll on her when she slumps against the wall like that (btw magnificent acting!).
I find it funny that the first time I agreed with something that Ada did this season was when she was really Indigo in disguise. I feel like behind the scenes Ada is probably being really supportive of Hecate, but it’s hard for me to sympathize with Ada at present because although she definitely has reason to be stressed out and overwhelmed, Hecate has a lot more trauma to deal with.
I like that Ethel is the one to find out that Miss Hardbroom is Joy. There are so many different ways that this could play out. It looks like she’s going to tell Felicity, which would likely mean the entire school would find out, but, she could potentially hide it from Felicity. In that case, I feel like she wouldn’t know whether to use the information to torment Indigo, blackmail Mildred, or...blackmail Miss Hardbroom?? I could see Ethel losing her respect for Miss Hardbroom because of what happened, but I could also see her trying to use it to get closer to Miss Hardbroom.
As for the next three episodes, the question is, which one of them will Hecate and Indigo have their “rrreunion” in? Will it be the next episode? And then the final two episodes will be the aftermath of that? Ending with a visit to the Great Wizard, Indigo giving up her magic, and Hecate being freed from her Cackle’s prison? Also, it seems like Indigo and Joy’s relationship was plutonic, if that is the case, it would be possible for Hecate to adopt Indigo...though maybe a bit awkward?? I think that could be a really happy ending for Hecate though, her going out into the nonmagical world with her adopted daughter Indigo and her wife Pippa who abandons the magical world in a second to be with them (because we all know that she would).
Alternatively Indigo could keep her magic, stay at Cackle’s, and be around for Ada and Hecate’s wedding. Speaking of weddings!
“I kissed a frog and I liked it!”
I’m really not sure how I feel about this line. I want to interpret it as like, a hint that we’re going to get a canon confirmation that Hecate is a lesbian, but I think that’s just wishful thinking.
I also wonder how Jill Murphy feels about Miss Hardbroom’s sexuality. She based the teachers at Cackle’s off of nuns who taught her, so let’s be real Miss Hardbroom probably was inspired by lesbians. I really don’t know how the author feels on the subject though. I know that in the 1998 version of the worst witch, there was a lot of subtext indicating that Miss Hardbroom and Miss Drill were into each other, but they had Miss Drill explicitly state that she had a boyfriend in such a way that it felt like the writers were implying that they didn’t really feel that it was true--more that they had to, perhaps because of the expectations for children’s tv shows at the time? I remember getting to the end of the worst witch (the last season at Cackle’s) and they have this little scene were they imply that Constance has a crush on Hellibore and I was just like no! It really felt like someone watched the 1998 version of the worst witch and told the writers it was too gay, so the writers intentionally shoved all of this heterosexual stuff into it that they didn’t really feel fit with the characters.
The writing in this version is definitely queer-friendly in a lot of subtle ways that I really appreciate. My favorite queer-friendly part was when one of the students pointed out that the love spell (that the teachers were poisoned with) specified wizard, which clearly showed that this generation accepts that women don’t necessarily fall in love with men. I feel like a lot of this show is about the enlightened generation z dealing with all of the problems caused by the generations before them. Mildred is the poster child of being saddled with the weight of past generations’ problems!
I’m really looking forward to Indigo finding out who Joy is, while at the same time, I’m dreading it because I know that it will be super intense and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be ready for it! At the same time, if they end this season on a cliffhanger and don’t have them begin to resolve their issues...now that would be super frustrating!
