A Whole Bunch of Small College Basketball Updates
All kinds of good stuff. In no particular order, here goes:
* Yesterday was the 125th Birthday of Basketball. The first game was played on January 20, 1891, at a YMCA in Springfield, MA. Dr. James Naismith’s game began with 13 rules.
* Eckerd held the nation’s longest win streak in NCAA Division II with 16 straight wins (which was a school record). Last night, on the road against Embry-Riddle, the Tritons fells to the Eagles, 68-65. Heck of a run.....and the Tritons are now 16-2 on the season. * I believe that Augustana (SD) now has the longest winning streak in NCAA Division II with 15 straight wins. They play on the road tomorrow night at Winona State, and then on Saturday at Upper Iowa.
* In NCAA Division III, with last night’s win over Baldwin Wallace, John Carroll is now 16-0. Whitworth moved to 15-0 with Saturday’s win over George Fox. With Saturday’s win over Morrisville State, Lancaster Bible moved to 12-0. As such, John Carroll, Whitworth and Lancaster Bible are the last remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division III.
* West Liberty was the last remaining undefeated team in NCAA Division II before they fell on the road to Concord, 108-93. For the game, Concord shot over 60%, and they were extremely hot in the second half, shooting over 68%. Senior Rob Reed led Concord with 36 points on 13-19 from the field.
* Ripon junior Ty Sabin scored 41 points (and surpassed 1,500 for his career) in an 81-80 win against Lawrence University. Here’s a link to the game story: http://redhawks.ripon.edu/news/2016/1/20/MBB_0120162653.aspx
* Congratulations to Southeastern senior Jake Hodges for surpassing 1,000 career points. He did it during a 91-89 win over Florida Memorial in a game where he finished with 27 points. Here’s the game story: http://fire.seu.edu/news/2016/1/20/MBB_0120163303.aspx
