Even without the tell-tale drum roll underneath, these opening guitar notes would stand out even among the hundreds of blues tracks that start with a handful of guitar notes. Those of us who come down firmly on Clapton’s side, in the argument about who was the best of the 60s English white boy blues masters, still recognise that this is one of the key moments from that era.
Beautiful song - originally by Little Willie John, whose brother Mertis John Jnr wrote it, contrary to what it says on the label. Beautifully sung - by Peter Green, also the lead guitarist. And brilliantly played by all the musicians.
Edit: This single version is available without the vinyl scratches on Black Magic Woman, one of the numerous Fleetwood Mac compilation albums.
