You've seen the headlines, you’ve seen the covers, now finally, we’re bringing you the two hottest models Derek Nurse and William Pointdexter together again in this issue of OUT Magazine! Returning to direct photography is long-time collaborator Christopher Chow, who is more excited than usual for this issue, and that is saying something.
As a world renown ballet dancer, Derek has the graceful lines of a swan, and the ferocity of focus to match. From a business mogul mother and another as a Congresswoman, Derek inherited their drive and became the first African American male principal ballet dancer at the American Ballet Theater. No stranger to cameras- Derek has been modelling for his family in home productions long before his stage career- he brings his trademark “chill” vibe to this series of languid shots focusing on the beauty of the human form.
William started out from much humbler beginnings, working as a lighting technician, he quickly transitioned to the under the very lights he still insists on setting up himself. His big break came during his first model lighting gig, at one of Derek’s earlier shoots. Christopher was the photographer, as-yet-unknown but already having a great eye for his style, declared William too good of a body to stay behind the lens and offered to shoot him too.
The story goes that William turned down the offer, after which Derek kept accidentally knocking into the lights, leading William to have to move in front of the camera to fix realign them. No confirmation on whether it was intentional on Derek’s part, but we would like to remind readers that he is a principal ballet dancer.
Christopher obtained some opportune photos of William, and the rest was history. The trio have been fast friends ever since, but this joint series has been a long time coming. Both Derek and William have not been subtle about their developing relationship in recent months, and their efforts towards supporting LGBT organizations in their local communities have not gone unnoticed.
The theme the trio have developed is “tenderness”. Friendship is tender. Love is tender. Throughout this series, a soft touch of hands, a slip of fabric, a caress of the gaze, all depict a tenderness that modern men are so lacking yet so desperate to grasp. Tenderness is a strength of the spirit, to hold the world close without crushing it. Witness Derek and William, holding each other up to the world.
