like a (rather unconvincing) monster, shikamaru roars playfully at his young son, just before he rubs his chin against the boy’s cheek. “daddy’s growing a goatee,” he informs him, poking the tip of the boy’s nose with his index finger. “do you know what a goatee is, shikadai? it’s sort of like chouji oji-san’s beard, but the hair will only be on daddy’s chin.”

he’s 200 moves deep into his predictions for this shougi game, every possible strategy his opponent may use mapped out within his mind with those of his own to counter. why he even bothers to plan so far ahead is beyond him—he’ll have his sensei beat in less than five moves, just like everyone else in this damned village. (honestly, would he ever face an opponent who actually put up a fight?) “hopefully your time rehabilitating didn’t take a toll on your shougi skills,” shikamaru utters with a straight-face, though there is playfulness in his tone. “i usually beat you in less than five moves. hopefully we don’t make it less than three, today.”

“kiba—” he likes akamaru—really, he does—but that still doesn’t mean pets are his thing. so, naturally, when akamaru licks his face, shikamaru is a bit more than peeved. “i’ve got slobber all over my face. control your dog!”
