Learning: It's meaning, characteristics, process and types
Meaning and Definitions of learning: Learning in psychology, the process by which a relatively lasting change in potential behaviour occurs because of practice or experience. Hacking your Intelligence and Learning Style to Game Better Pt. 2
So I addressed the different ways of learning which should be your first task when trying to understand and learn something. Know how you learn best. Even if you are excellent at understanding of gaming, not understanding which way you learn can handicap you. This part is how each of the different intelligence's can go about learning the same task. This is to point out there are different ways of thinking about addressing the same issue.
Task: Learning how to last hit minions:
Run exercise in training mode, then with bots, then against people. Never try to do a new task in a ranked game because it will punish you as well as your team
You will need a goal of how many minions you can get without using skills to get minions. Make sure you can get all minions with just auto attacks, then you can move on to using abilities
These are merely ideas of that type of thinking; they can help anyone even if you don’t naturally think in that way.
Naturalist (nature smart)
-Understanding pathing of minions to position yourself
-Understanding when minions die without you doing damage
Musical (sound smart)
-Having a friend coach you on when to last hit
-Consider last hitting while listening to music (on the beat)
-Saying out loud the hp a minion needs to be at and how much damage you need to have to kill it
Logical-mathematical (number/reasoning smart)
-Calculate the damage needed to last hit
-Experiment with runes/masteries to get towards your goal
-Knowing your attack speed to hit minions on time
Existential (life smart)
-Understanding the gold advantage from last hitting equal to getting a kill
-Relating last hitting to your overall goal in the game
Interpersonal (people smart)
-Gaining an understanding of how enemy players will move and harass
-Using your knowledge of enemy players to capitalize on when to last hit
Bodily-kinesthetic (body smart)
-Run training simulations to see when you should last hit
-Remember your physical positioning while playing (you are training your body to know when to last hit)
Linguistic (word smart)
-Clarifying with others when to last hit and harass
-Communicating with your support if you need help pushing the lane or not
Intra-personal (self smart)
-Set a goal for cs at the 5 minute mark, and for the overall game
-Make sure your goal is aligned with performance in lane, adjust play style accordingly
Spatial (picture smart)
-Envision where minions are in lane and your position to get them
-Think of ways to use your skills to harass enemy champions and last hit. Bonus points if you can only use skills to harass and still last hit.
Hacking your Intelligence and Learning Style to Game Better
In my last entry I talked about the different types of intelligence and learning styles. This is going to be an example format so you can create the same for yourself. These are just two very basic level lesson plans but you can get creative in your formats for doing these things.
Task: Learning new build on champion in League of Legends
Visual: seeing the pictures of them items and knowing the names. Observe a friend’s match who uses that build. Understand the build order by seeing others do it. Look at your enemy team mates and see if they are building that way and copy it
Auditory: having a friend tell you the build over voice chat before you are in game, and then while you are in game. You can also do this in the training mode.
Reading/Writing: Read the build online via a guide, write the build down on paper. Typing doesn’t using help someone remember as much as physically writing it down.
Kinesthetic: Go into training mode and buy the build in order, repetition will help with remembering by doing it.
Task: Switching from a squishy champion to a tanky one
Visual: watching professional game play of tanky champions, watching how your friends play tanks
Auditory: This is extremely difficult to do. Understand that you will be front line and will need to peel for carries and be listening to your team mates on how to build and for your placement in game.
Reading/Writing: Look up guides online for the champion. Discuss with friends who play tanks what your positioning should be and have them send you how to play via typing or you write it down.
Kinesthetic: Go into training mode with friends doing 1v1 on the same champion that is a tank. Discuss how your build should go and engagements. Constantly observe your positioning and work on it. Test your basic understanding against bots and when you feel ready play against people.
