Society’s View on Abuse
When the word abuse is heard or seen, people automatically speak the cruelty of the abuser and mourn the victim of the abuse. There are so many types of abuse that is around us. It’s around us every day, and some of us unfortunately live it every day. In today’s society, abuse is not hidden from society but it has been sadly accepted in society as normal. It makes us wonder, how exactly, did abuse become a ‘normal’ thing in today’s society.
In 2009, we all heard of Chris Brown and Rihanna where he had abused Rihanna. Many were so angry at the abuse he had done towards Rihanna. But there was also acceptance of the abuse Chris did. Some women had actually gone on social media to say how much they would let Chris beat them any time or any day because he was ‘sexy’ or had money. What does this say about today’s society way of thinking when it comes to abuse?
There is also the fact of the abuse of culture that is currently a big issue in today’s society right now concerning the black community. Many have questions on how to stop racial injustice? In Bad Feminist (The politics of Respectability),“ by Roxanne Gay, CNN anchor Don Lemon had offered ‘rules’ for the black community in order for them to blend in with the white community by staying in school, less children out of wedlock and so forth. This thinking has molded the society into abusing the culture by tossing blame onto them.
There is the abuse of women that happens today and back then concerning pregnancies. In “The alienable Rights of Women,” women were forced to use any means necessary to get rid of unwanted pregnancy as early as 1300’s. Women had to do so much in order to get an abortion back then, that half the time, women just decided to get rid of pregnancies on their own. Sad to say, history does repeat itself and unfortunately, this abuse of power is happening in today’s society where it is difficult to get help or terminate a pregnancy if some don’t meet the certain criteria.
In Dark Continent of our bodies by E. Frances White (pg 127.), the sexual abuse that is apparent concerning men, specifically black and white men is very enlightening and makes us question how can this abuse happened back then where as now, homosexuality is still a concern in today’s society that people who are homosexual are seen as something other than human, disgusting and have been abused by society today either verbally, sexually, physically, or emotionally and sometimes some have taken their lives or live in a state of fear.
What kind of society do we live in where abuse back then was more lenient and accepting than today’s society but yet today’s society, it is the biggest thing that is going on in our world and more problems are arising because of it?
