A Link to Da Past 05: UBCON 2012
Friday:
Before event leaving out for the convention, I think I forget something and go back to see what 'may' be missing and look over and there's my camera and mic sitting off to the side so I WOULDN'T forget it. Yup, just a little nervous. So I hop in the car and ride over to get my cousin who was coming with me to his first convention before he had to leave for NY. It was a little strange having someone else in tow who knew less then me about different things. Some of his remarks were a little... presumptuous and came off a little stereotypical for the occasion. It could be the teenage mindset talking. I wouldn't know, my teens were a few years ago and even then I was never one to get hung up on trivial things that aren't affecting me directly. It got old really quickly because in a way it was like ruining my "convention magic", does that make sense. It's like if you went to a circus and you saw all the funny clowns walking around bringing joy to the people and having someone lean in and whisper what the clowns are really like under the makeup and big shoes. But I wasn't mad, conventions may not be his thing again I don't know that's up to him to decide. Moving on. At the actual convention It was pretty straight forward. I walked right in and a staff member says to me "You're not here for the convention are you?" which I took as meaning I at least looked like I belonged/attended school there. Great staff there. Even got complimented on the tone of my voice by a pretty lady working the registration table. ;) Tickets got, and we sat down to see what's what and where's what and when that what might be. (made sense to me) So I'm looking at the con book, emphasis on book (more on that in a minute), trying to make heads or tails of what events are currently going on to no avail. What I personally would have liked is an itemized list like there was on the con website so I could better see what was going on. I can understand why there was the need for the book, it's so that each event can have a little description alongside it detailing what/where/when it is. The drawback is that with so many events, it accumulates pretty quickly into what looks like a pretty lengthy pamphlet. That would be one of my very few gripes with the convention itself, most other hiccups I had were my own fault. What got me chasing my tail was the fact that I'm "directionally challenged" in a way. I can follow a map, I can read directions and give directions (that's how I actually found the convention not being a native of this collegiate land) but when it comes to getting myself there proves to be the difficult part. The last think I wanted to do was wander into some philosophy class still in session and interrupt their discussion on the meaning of life with "42". (Though that would be funny, to me at least.) For that reason I roosted in the Student Union for the most part. It was a pretty busy place nearly the entire time I was there which says something about my instincts. I tried finding a few events there with mixed results, a few I might have been either too early for or they were cancelled so that may have just been my mistake. For the most part I just wandered from place to place taking pics and taking in the con atmosphere. Friday was gonna be a "short" day given that it started late but it was a little shorter because I had to leave by about 9 so my cousin could make his bus. That night I had a game plan for the next day. Saturday I woke up Saturday with my printout of the event listing and my camera bag in tow as I made my way to UBCON. Saturday I sat out to get as much stuff filmed as I could, and I believe I succeeded in that aspect. (12 videos in total including a slideshow, not bad at all). Saturday was a whirlwind of fantastic. It started a little slow but really picked up. I found the directory, the map that was IN THE CON BOOK, and oodles of other stuff. Oodles I tell you! Saturday was THE day, it had the most events taking place that day, the most people there and the greatest opportunity for awesome. I was fortunate to end up where I ended up most of the day that day.(directionally challenged if you remember) Thinking back, had I of stayed in one place too long or just did one thing then the amount/subject of my videos would be completely different. Which would sort of suck because I'm happy with what I got which is a variety of different things. Saturday went a dozen times more smoothly as well, I had a better grasp of where I was going and what was going on without having to study the con book. Honestly, Saturday has me looking ahead to next years convention. Not that I'm making plans for next years convention already, but I seriously enjoyed myself enough to justify going again sometime in the future. The attendees, the cosplayers (slight difference), the staff, everyone was nice and accommodating. The people I got to take pictures of and interview were spectacular, I enjoyed interviewing each and every one of them and I believe they enjoyed my company as well. In my somewhat limited convention history, UBCON 2012 has to be near the very top in overall "good times had". I would like to say thanks again to UBCON for putting on a good convention and allowing me to film some of it's attendees. That was my experience.
