Under the Bodhi Tree with Sam
Where the elements of our plane of existence
water, earth, fire and wind have no footing.
There the stars don’t shine, the sun isn’t visible.
There the moon doesn’t appear.
There darkness is not found.
And when a sage, a wise seer through their wisdom
Has realized [this] for themselves.
then from form and formlessness
from bliss and pain they are finally freed.
The Udana: The Utterances of the Buddha
A person with good eyes, encountering a treacherous, uneven place, would try hard to avoid it. A wise person, in the world of life, should avoid evil deeds.
Udāna 5.43

Swarms of winged insects kept falling into these oil lamps and thereby met their end, came to destruction and utter ruin. Seeing those swarms of winged insects so doing, the Exalted One saw the meaning in it and uttered this verse of uplift,
They hasten up and past, but miss the real; A bondage ever new they cause to grow. Just as the flutterers fall into the lamp, so some are bent on what they see and hear...

"When, Bahiya, for you in the seen is merely what is seen... in the cognized is merely what is cognized, then, Bahiya, you will not be 'with that.' When, Bahiya, you are not 'with that,' then, Bahiya, you will not be 'in that.' When, Bahiya, you are not 'in that,' then, Bahiya, you will be neither here nor beyond nor in between the two. Just this is the end of suffering."

Acchecchi vaṭṭaṃ, byagā nirāsaṃ. Visukkhā saritā na sandati. Chinnaṃ vaṭṭaṃ na vattati. Esevanto dukkhassā.
One has broken the cycle, attained freedom from desire. The dried-up stream no longer flows. The cycle, broken, no longer turns. This, just this, is the end of misery.

Sace bhāyatha dukkhassa, sace vo dukkhamappiyaṃ, mākattha pāpakaṃ kammaṃ, āvi vā yadi vā raho. Sace ca pāpakaṃ kammaṃ, karissatha karotha vā, Na vo dukkhā pamutyatthi: upeccapi palāyataṃ.
If you fear pain, if you dislike pain, don't do an evil deed in open or secret. If you're doing or will do an evil deed, you won't escape pain: it will catch you even as you run away.
