Dominick Cruz: At bantamweight there isn't a clear contender.You have Demetrious Johnson coming off a contentious decision over former champ Miguel Torres and Brian Bowles recent victory over Takeya Mizugaki though the condition of his hand is still unknown. Some have called for a immediate rematch with Faber but the lack of a bad decision or the fact it was that close of a fight make it unlikely.
Chris Leben: Prior to having his head meet Brian Stanns fist he was on a bit of a run with wins over Arron Simpson and Yoshirio Akiyama. Having him take Vitro Belfort if he beats Akiyama at UFC 133 would be a nice slugfest.
Dennis Siver:Who would of thought Dennis Siver would be on this run he has put together? Melvin Guillard wants to fight him again on the Houston card, Guillard is on nice streak and Joe Silva needs to weed out contenders somehow.
Tito Ortiz:Well this is a first for me. Since ive been a MMA fan (UFC 100) I've never seen Ortiz claim victory or do his grave digger routine. The winner of Lil Nog Franklin would provide a good name to match Ortiz's celebrity. If its Franklin its a winnable but still dangerous fight if its Nogueria a first for him and provides new challenges.
Carlos Condit:It's doubtful the Nevada AC will be able to overturn Stunguns loss this time. St. Pierre Diaz is tenativly scheduled for October in three months so Condit will need another fight around that time or just afterwords to really clench number one contendership. Jake Sheilds v Jake Ellenberger is in September also Jon Fitch and BJ Penn are on the sidelines wins over Penn or Fitch would be a major qou.Fitch has said he only wants to fight former champions or number one contenders Condit is the final WEC Welterweight champ for what its worth. Melvin Guillard: He called out Dennis Siver and wants to fight on the Houston card. Fighting Siver would be a good keep busy fight and help knock off a potintial contender. The only other ranked lightweights not busy would be Gleison Tibau and Sean Sherk. Out of those three names ive mentioned Guillard owns wins over Tibau and Siver.
Rafael dos Anjos: Its back on the road for him picking off lightweight scalps. A fight with Evan Dunham or Mac Danzig wouldn't be bad next steps. Fellow Brazillion Gleison Tibau also comes to mind. e You can Follow me on Twitter @MaZZM
Cruz defends title Tito wins (finally) Wanderli falls
UFC 132 was off to a tepid start with all four of the facebook prelims ending in decision, luckily there were no robberies to complain about. The fights weren't even that boring the first round of Njoukuani Winner was fantastic but something just seemed a little slow. All that changed once you went from your computer screen and turned on the TV. Two first round KO's for the Spike prelims with Melvin Guillard using speed to flummox and KO Shane Roller and Rafel Dos Anjos landing a picture perfect left hook dropping the former contender. It was off to the races from there. The Payer Per View main card kicked off with a welterweight bout between Carlos Condit and Don Hyun Kim. Both fighters were riding impressive win streaks, Condit like stablemate Melvin Guillard seemed to finally put all the pieces together. The natural born killers instinct showed when he landed a flying knee on the South Korean and followed up with swift ground and pound for the finish. With this win Condit sets himself up for a major fight hopefully to figure out the next contender for the winner of George St. Pierre Nick Diaz.
In a bit of a odd turn or perhaps a sign of how far he had fallen Tito Ortiz literally battled for his career against Ryan Bader. Tito was as high as +500 and many thought he was simply done to many injuries and un-evolved style for the new breed of fighter. Bader himself is a younger version of Ortiz when it comes to his wrestling first attitude.Many on twitter during and before hand joked at what the excuse would be coming from Tito in a post fight interview.He could still punch though and landed a big right dropping his foe. Ortiz pounced and locked up a guillotine and won for the first time since 2006 when he TKO'd Ken Shamrock. Ortiz is far down my list of favorite fighters but you couldn't help but feel good for the guy. For Bader you have to wonder whats next for him once looked at as a top prospect lost to Jon Jones, no shame there than gets finished by a guy who hasn't won in 5 years. Dennis Siver and Matt Wiman battled it out at lightweight both of them on a decent winning streak both pecking at the heels of the long list of contenders in the division. It was a bloody affair as Wiman cut Siver. They battled to a decision and the judges saw it for Siver much to Wimans dismay who stormed out of the cage.
Wanderli Silva is one of the most entertaining fighters there have ever been. After dropping to middleweight and taking out Michael Bisping at UFC 110 he looked to have the makings of another run in him.Injuries though plagued him keeping him out of a fight with Yoshirio Akiyama, who his foe Chris Leben stepped up to and won. It was 16 months his longest lay off ever and he turns 36 tomorrow Silva is no spring chicken. When the bell rang he came out firing and landed a great shot on Leben who fired right back with upper cuts and hooks and soundly dropped the Axe Murderer. With this loss Silva becomes 2-6 in his last 8 fights. If you followed the sound bites coming out of Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz you would know they did not like each other. Cruz thinks Faber is cocky and Faber didn't appreciate Cruz signing on his face when they first fought in the WEC.A little silly but wars have been fought over less. Going into this it was going to be Cruz speed and movement against Fabers power and wrestling. Over 5 rounds Cruz moved all around the cage with speed keeping in and out of Fabers range only letting him land one off shots for the majority of the fight. The real treat came in the scrambles they created while fighting off take downs Faber spinning out of Cruzs knee taps and Cruz scrambling and spinning out of Fabers weights locks. This was a fast pace that many saw as a close fight. The judges had it (50–45, 49–46, 48–47) all for Cruz who became the first bantamweight champion to defend his belt in the UFC. No clear contender is waiting in the wings for Dominick Cruz the most likely contender is Demetrius Johnson who is coming off a contentious victory over Miguel Torres. The decision isn't a robbery making the call for a rematch and blood so Sean Shelby has his work cut out to him. Faber is now 0-4 in title fights since losing his title no shame in losing to Jose Aldo,Dominick Cruz or Mike Thomas Brown. Faber is clearly a top bantam and feather weight and a solid draw. Dose he eventually battle for the title again? Yes. In the long run though he can be the Rich Franklin of the lower weight classes filling in for a card when needed adding name value to cards and fight top prospects giving them some shine.
