similar to the majority of people who read htn for the first time, i figured out gideon was the narrator almost 3/4 into the book, but there's one moment (i think chapter 4 or 5?) right at the beginning when harrow kisses ianthe that i couldn't help but be perplexed at the sudden reaction of the narrator.
like:
"this, at least, she hadn't expected—how could she, what the fuck,"
and
"she made a small, tight, half wounded sound—she was probably trying to call for help,"
are such gideon-like commentary. i remember laughing and then being confused because who was narrating that? and why were they adding their own personal feelings to it?
it's a nice detail that really threw me into a loop.
