Anyone who knew Uhtred knew Flora was almost always in arms-length distance of him. He protected her and trusted no one else to do the job correctly. In return, she supported him in all his endeavors, no matter what they were or how extreme and idiotic they were.
Uhtred took care of her like a sister, but not a sister because the way he first thought about her was not a way to think about a sister. However, that was long ago.
She stuck with him through wars and wives, kings and oaths; and never once thought about leaving his side.
Assisted by Beocca, she rode back from Winchester, immediately going to Uhtred to inform him of her return.
“Lord Uhtred, the Lady Flora has returned from Winchester,” a guard of Coccham reported and left just before the woman made her way into the hall.
“Uhtred, I have arrived!” she called as soon as she opened the door to the hall.
“I’ve been told,” he smiled at her as she groaned.
“They always ruin the surprise,” she pouted before quickly making her way into Uhtred’s embrace.
“Who brought you to Coccham? I was about to send Finan for you at sunrise,” he asked with a confused look, pulling away from her.
“Beocca,” she shrugged and began to remove a few layers of furs.
“The priest?” he questioned and grew angry.
“Yes…?” she trailed off.
“And what would he do if you were to be attacked? Pray to his God?” he almost yelled.
“Well, Uhtred, you could have joined me and seen your children,” she offered, “then I would have had the best protection, yes?”
“I could not, not now. We are preparing for an attack on—.”
“God, I knew you’d fight until the war was won,” she stopped him.
“I am a warrior; this is what I do. Where do you become confused?” he asked with a small, humorless laugh, “I have spoke to you many times. I fight and we stay here, I do this for us.”
“I know you serve the king and you do so well, Uhtred. Do not mistake my words—I am thankful. You are the great, undefeated warrior, but you deserve a chance to see your son,” she reasoned and rested her hand upon his shoulder.
“I have no time for the affairs of my children,” he shook his head, “and you visit them often.”
“Look around,” she smacked the back of his head, “Look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now. You have come close to death too many times and your children need you before it is too late.”
Uhtred sent her a look as to say he didn’t want to, “Uhtred is a—.”
“All your children, Uhtred,” she interrupted him, “even Os—.”
“You will not speak of that child!” he rose his voice as he towered over the woman.
“I am not one of your weak wives who will allow you to act this way toward me,” she spoke calmly, “I take care of your neglected children, I have stood by your side through all your strife, and I stand with Saxons every day. I will speak how I care to and you will not speak to me as I am lesser.”
Uhtred contemplated in silence for a moment before letting out a long sigh, “You are right,” he refused to look her in the eye, “You have done much for me and my children, I am grateful. I am glad to see you made it back alive.”
“As am I, now, who are planning an attack on?” she asked and sat at the table with the lord, who watched her with a prideful smile.
