NYC-Montreal International Startup Festival

Day 2

The Montreal International festival was marvelous. They had the best keynote speakers. I was trying to listen to all the speakers and talk to as many different people.  I felt like I didn't have enough time to get to everywhere.  They had several booths NYC booth, Canadian startup booths, searching for your cofounder booth, NYC BOOTH- Twilio booth, Sendgrid booth, female founders booth etc....One booth had different founders that already are in business such as LIghtspeed.  CEO Dax is quite handsome and charming and he was kind enough to answer some questions that I had. He recommended me to read the The Art of the Start - Guy Kawasaki.  I am reading the book.

I noticed Twilio booth that Meghan and Meghan did a great job with the display.  It was neat and what I liked the most are the stickers. Why? Because people tend to grab the stickers and stick them on their labtop and PEOPLE remember TWILIO logo.  Its simple.  Bold red and white colors and it’s a shape of a circle. I felt as if it had personality and easy to look at.

I remember while was waiting to do the 60 sec elevator pitch. I told Micheal from Connect cubed that I went to the tech crunch event and the after party. He was asking me how did you go? That ticket cost over $1,000  I answered “ Maybe its because I am chameleon and I can blend into different shapes.”  Inside the event I was amazed, well organized and they had a lot of tech companies from all over the world. I felt like a little kid in a toy store looking and experiencing something special.  New.  Revolutionary.  Life changing experience. I felt that everybody here wanted to help the world be a better place.   It’s a positive atmosphere. Later on I got to meet a developer from Tokbox and he told me about what the company is doing and showing me his amazing coding moves. I asked him if he is going to the after party and he said yes.

That night everyone from the bus got together to go to a restaurant in Montreal.  We went ordered some food and I remember one of the cofounder from Sendgrid walked in. I went up to him and had my powerpoint slides ready to ask him tons of questions and pick his brain.  (How many times would I get the chance to ask someone who is ahead of me 5 years to know if my idea sucks or needs to be reevaluated at different angles?) I even made a prototype.  Our site is credohealthusa.com-for now it is down.  As I was talking to Sendgrid cofounder he simply asked me ok you have tons of valid reasons here that you want to solve.   Pick ONE. I gave him this incredulous look and said " why?  theyre all important for the hospital.....  I mean its hard to pick and choose."  He explained about how he and his cofounder  thought of solving ONE problem and be the Best at it in the WORLD.  Making sure emails will always be reliable delivery and emails will never be lost or sent to junk mail. I was thinking wow. HE's Right. Hamlet was telling me your food is here its getting cold. I lost track of time. I didnt know the conversation was 1hour.  I thought it was 10mins.  I was reflecting on what he said to me and I realized that the ultimate need that he fixed for people is to make sure the emails are going to your inbox. Before I left I got to take a picture with the sendgrid crew.

Looking at movies, I always thought that the ultimate need was to be loved. But looking at it now, years later, and supposedly more mature, my views on the issue are totally differently. Although I may often be a loud (crazy, passionate etc - I'm your stereotypical Mediterranean person) I can also be quite shy. Weird, I know. But the story behind this is that when I deactived my Facebook & Twitter account months ago (facebook was re-actived, I guess my self-discipline skills aren't that great) I was driving insane. And the reason why I was driving insane was not only the fact that the deactivation of profiles saved me loads of time, but also because I was no longer able to express my self.

Even the smallest thing, like uploading a music video, or posting your favorite quote on your wall, or tweeting about what you're doing at a specif time.. All of those usually considered unimportant actions, do actually express who you are -in both direct and indirect ways-. Bloggers, Youtubers, singers, artists.. .It's all about getting a message, your message across. It's all about expressing who you truly are, expressing your fears, your hopes, the things that piss you off, everything.

The need to be loved is strong but the need to express our selves is even stronger...
