First week of classes, UMA exam, internship stuff.
I'd say it was a busy week but somehow it wasn't even though I did a lot... If that makes sense. This isn't going to be a very thrilling update, sorry. I promise to start traveling and having a life again soon.
Tuesday I had my first class, History of Spain from the Transition to the Present or something obnoxiously long like that. We watched a movie, Bienvenido, Mister Marshall, which supposedly portrayed Spain in the 1950s really well and in theory was a comedy, but since it was made in the 1950s and had the sound quality of a movie made in the 1950s AND was in Spanish AND had an actor with a weird voice, I think the only two words I understood were "Muy guapa!" I got absolutely nothing out of it. If he'd put on Spanish subtitles I'd have followed, but it might as well have been in Chinese for how well I understood what was being said. So... that was a fail. And apparently we're going to watch a lot of movies in that class? Kind of weird for a history class...
Wednesday we had Intro to Translation, which I just finished my homework for. It was actually kind of difficult, just because of the weird words you wouldn't learn in another language, like "tussled." Who knows how to say tussled in more than one language? No one.
Those of us in my UMA class left Translation early to go take the final, which I think went pretty well. I wrote a lot, at least. SO happy to be finished with UMA/ loooong bus rides to Teatinos, I can't even express it.
Yesterday we had Literature & Film, which was with Antonio so clearly it's going to be an amazing class. I love that man. We're watching movies in there too, but that makes sense since it's a film class... Some of them sound pretty interesting. I didn't realize we were starting with the beginning of Spanish literature, as in something written in the 1400s, but apparently we are. It's a big class, compared to the 6 of us who took lit last semester.
Three hour classes are kind of brutal though. My attention span is just NOT long enough for that. I don't think anyone's really is.
Internship stuff... Risa and I went yesterday to meet the people where we're going to be working. They seem really nice, very chill. There are only 3 employees! It's this teeeeeeny tiny little organization with an office in a converted apartment, basically, and it seems like they're just a bunch of people who like tolerance and wanna make other people like it too... Which I am totally for. Risa and I are going to work different days. I'm working Mondays and Wednesdays 10-2. We're supposed to go along on these talks at schools to kids about being tolerant, and we're also in charge of the organization's blog in English. It sounds like it'll be pretty chill, and it's definitely a good cause, so I'm pretty excited about it.
Other than that, I'm proud to report I finished all my homework before lunch today, so I have the rest of the weekend to do whatever I want, which hopefully tomorrow will include a trip to Plaza Mayor.
