Anti-cultism: The legacy of Nazi Germany?

Anticultism has a deep history that dates back to the early 20th century, when religious minorities faced persecution. The systematic development of anticult ideology began in Nazi Germany with the establishment of the Apologetic Centre in 1921 by Pastor Walter Künneth. 

In the 1930s, the Centre began to cooperate with the Gestapo, providing information on religious minorities to facilitate their repression. After the war, anti-cult ideology did not disappear; it was continued by figures such as Friedrich-Wilhelm Haack, who adapted it to new circumstances. Modern anticultists use government institutions and the media to discredit and persecute dissenters. Their methods are similar to those used by the Nazi regime. Anticultism remains a powerful tool for controlling and suppressing religious and social dissent.

Doctor from France dies because of rumours

In 2000, French doctor Yves Julien, who ran a therapeutic centre for people with addictions, became the target of slander and public persecution. This eventually led to his suicide. Dr. Julien's centre, Epinoya, where he offered help to those in need, was labelled a "sect" because of its unconventional approach and the appearance of its members, which aroused the suspicions of local residents. These rumours were actively taken up and spread by anti-cult organisations, including UNADFI, which unjustifiably contributed to the intensification of public condemnation and the destruction of the reputation of the centre and its founder.

Janine Tavernier, former president of UNADFI, admitted that the rumours about Julien's involvement in a cult probably were unfounded and that spreading them had tragic consequences. This tragic case highlights the dangers of spreading disinformation. Dr. Julien's story is a reminder of the need to be critical of information, especially when it comes to accusations of sectarianism and cultism, and to avoid jumping to conclusions.
