The Two Captains

It was a dark morning, cool and empty, with the sterile smell of computers and steel that lingered in Steve Rogers’s nose. No matter how hard he tried, it was difficult to get away from it. Not that he couldn’t, but...
Whenever he stepped outside of the compound, Steve could only feel the oppressive weight of the sky... of trillions of lives weighing down on his shoulders. So he would go back into the compound. Tell himself that he would go for a run tomorrow, but he wouldn’t. He would go to the lab and watch the number of dead or missing tick higher and higher every second. He would double check on Fury’s pager, which they had found in his ashes. Maybe it helped to remind himself that he wasn’t the only one who lost people. Sometimes people would join him. And maybe it helped. Maybe it didn’t.
Finally, three days after the snap, the pager stopped broadcasting. And someone new arrived.
In the end, Bruce had volunteered to tell this “Captain Marvel” what had happened to Fury, and what was going on. Steve kept an eye on the muscular blonde woman, but he was far too tired to be suspicious of her. Exhaustion and heartache weighed on him. He stayed close by... but he said nothing.
