At the end of this comic there’s a short scuffle between Wolverine, Psylocke, Havok, and Cameron Hodge that looks absolutely amazing, and what makes it even better is Wolvie and Besty completely get their asses kicked.

There isn’t a whole lot of depth to this crossover, it’s just the X-Men fighting against a government, but some these comics look so stunningly amazing almost nothing else matters. Jim Lee is just an amazing talent. A while ago Jim Lee posted a picture he drew in high school, and I think the lesson he was trying to convey was, “with practice, anyone can become great at their art, just look at how much I used to suck.”

Man we’re really getting the whole gang back together here aren’t we. Genosha’s plot of abducting a bunch of New Mutants doesn’t seem so smart when you consider all it’s really accomplishing is uniting the lost X-Men again. Hey Cameron Hodge, you supposed tactical genius, ever hear of divide and conquer?? You’re doing the exact opposite!! (Uncanny X-Men #271 - Dec 1990) Happy Holidays 1990!

Welp here comes the poseur brigade. Sigh, sorry. Reading these comics now, the trio of Wolverine, Jubilee, and porn star Psylocke comes off as super cringy to me. Just look at all that ‘tude. Is that Sonic the Hedgehog over there? Or Poochie? They’ve got so much ‘tude I can’t tell the difference. At least we get to see Wolverine get KOed Havok’s fascist girlfriend. 

Ooo right in the old Glass Joe! Right in the kisser! That’s just a nice shot of Wolverine getting KOed right there. 

Jim Lee really excels at drawing expressions of pain. Just look at those agonized faces! I got a concussion just from reading the opening of this comic. What a talent this guy is! I’m really happy that, unlike Rob Liefeld, my appreciation of Jim Lee’s work continues to grow after all these years. Cheers. (Uncanny X-Men #271 - Dec 1990)

It’s hard to sympathize with this Genegineer guy. For every person who has ever had an abusive parent that’s sent their kid away to a conversion therapy camp or otherwise forced them to live a way that was unnatural to them, we just want Storm to slit this guy’s throat. How can you treat your kids like this! I can’t even understand how anyone can hold convictions this strong, let alone the wrong ones, let alone against your own child. Pretty much just fuck all of humanity that acts this way. If bringing children into the world isn’t enough to spark any form of true human compassion, they you are an absolute lost cause.

Man, Cameron Hodge is such an unexpectedly great villain in this story. Look at him slinking around like a cybernetic tarantula, what’s left of his flesh rotting off his face. Or are those old age spots? Doesn’t matter. Man, this is all I need in a villain! I need him to look awesome and be psychotic. And look at how much better stupid puns work when the person saying them is completely psychotic! “Stick around!” Ha. If this was Arnold Schwarzenegger in Batman and Robin I’d be like Jesus we need to make 6 sequels to this movie. (Uncanny X-Men #271 - Dec 1990)
