`Peter Bramley artwork advertising the Dana Beal Benefit Boogie, February 4, 1972. Music by: Uncle Buck's, David Peel, Evil, Nat Turner's Rebellion, Teenage Lust, and—not listed on the poster—the debut of the New York Dolls. Above, excerpts from I, Doll: Life and Death with the New York Dolls, by founding bassist Arthur Kane. AJ Weberman wrote about the concert for the New York Ace: “The Free Ranger tribe—Tom, Melanie, Cindy, Frank, Mike, and others—did most of the work and fronted the bread for the hall. Unfortunately, not too much money was raised since the hard-core freaks who came to the thing were stoned poor and no superstars were on the bill to attract the teeny-boppers. Not only that, but a lot of the so-called hip media turned down ads for the thing—like WNEW said it was “too controversial.” Anyway TEENAGE LUST played some great rock and roll while the lead singer of DOLLS just blew everyone out. I got drunk for a change—I’m a confirmed pothead—and cooled my head out completely.”
