Heyyy, so, it’s currently a quarter past three... in the morning. And I’d like to talk about Muffet, specifically Muffet in Underfell.
Yup.
You know, I’ve seen a lot of interesting ideas for Muffet: a wine brewer, a debt collector, etc. But there’s never really been an idea that stood up and screamed at me, “I am Underfell Muffet.” One that seemed to contain a piece of the original while behaving the opposite, if that makes any sense.
To be honest, I’m not sure there will be one, or if there even has to be one. Take Violetby, for example; I can’t exactly apply the same logic to him that I have for the other characters, but he’s still a fun character to write and think about and he fits in well with the Underfell universe. Not all of the characters have to fit in with the idea that I’ve cooked up.
That said... I had an interesting idea.
Muffet
So, what do we know about the original Muffet? We know that she’s very interested in material gain, due to the expensive nature of her pastries. Of course, this desire for material wealth actually comes from a noble place: she seeks to free the spiders trapped in the Ruins.
How do we reverse this while still maintaining some part of Muffet’s personality? Well, this is a little bit of a stretch, but... what if instead of seeking material gain, she sought spiritual and intellectual gain?
And what would that look like?

Enter Madame Muffet, a fortune teller of supposedly exquisite caliber. Capable of revealing the web that fate has spun, for a reasonable price. And when I say reasonable, I do mean reasonable; practically pocket change.
Seems too good to be true? That’s because it is: she’s also an information broker.
It’s surprising just how much people will talk about within the small confines of her tent. People with full wallets come to her seeking information, and she gives it. Her prices vary - sometimes it’s more information, sometimes it’s money, sometimes it’s something else entirely.
She might have had nobler goals once, such as the original Muffet, but she appears to have gone astray. Maybe she needs a nudge in the right direction-?
However, the following remains true regardless of whether you’re dealing with Madame Muffet or Muffet the information broker: you do not want to get on her bad side.
She has many strings to pull.
Part of the reason I wrote this was because I thought her attacks would be cool as well! Imagine a set of attacks based on the Major Arcana: an attack for the Sun, Moon and Star cards that involve dodging the sun, the moon, and the stars; an attack for the Tower that involves a tower crumbling while you avoid the falling rubble; dodging a Chariot that chases you around, and so on.
It seems like the kind of thing that you’d actually see in Undertale - I wouldn’t be surprised if Toby considered putting something like that in, but decided not to due to programming difficulties or time constraints.
