New This Week: Katagami Stencils

A collection of authentic stencils once used to create kimono fabric.   These are getting hard to come by in good condition.  While most are usable for someone familiar with them, we prefer to treat them as artwork that merits framing.  We've seen them used in lampshades or window coverings... Katagami are the stencils used to create layers of design on traditional Japanese kimono.  Each one is cut by hand, either with a free-hand knife or a sharp and tiny punch tool. They are made from one or two sheets of heavy paper and then covered with persimmon juice to add strength and moisture resistance.  (For delicate designs, two sheets of paper were stacked and cut together, then a thin silk screen was placed between them before fusing the papers together with persimmon juice.) Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used, but these older paper stencils are often still usable in addition to being a work of art.

If you can you should really go to your local(-ish) markets, and if you visit someone a distance from you go to a local market there (especially small town markets).

If you peruse thoroughly you will often find treasures , markets are usually the place to find unique things. Although if you are properly aware of your tastes and good at spotting things you like, then you don't have to be as thorough (convenient if you have limited energy).
