I am proud of my resilience and I am proud of yours
Thought of the day;
I don’t owe anyone anything. I don’t owe you my time. I don’t owe you money. I don’t owe you my friendship. Hell, I don’t even owe you a passing glance.
I WILL NOT feel bad for not wanting to be your friend if you’ve interfered with my life in any negative way. I won’t be sad to be left by a “friend.” Because friends don’t just leave. That would make you NOT my friend. Concept. I don’t need to question if I’m making the right choice by dropping/avoiding toxic people. I will not lose sleep over petty high school bullshit.
I’m an adult. I pay rent. I own a car. I own a dog. I pay for my own cell phone. I work 40+ hours a week and I’ve had my current job for 2 years. I don’t have time for your bullshit, let alone even think about the next piece of shit, user, burnout, loser that might take advantage of me.
I don’t owe you an apology for anything. I don’t have time to waste on bad people anymore.
Introducing.....Universal You
UNIVERSAL YOU
‘ISKALA’
Monday 11th October
“From Kazakhstan to Scotland’s Capital”

Universal You are an Edinburgh based band, featuring a singer from Kazakhstan. They are an exciting three-piece with soaring vocals and raucous guitars, and are visually striking due to their lack of a drummer or a bass player! In a musical culture full of ordinary trends, they are a welcome change from the ordinary.
‘Universal You’ are Paul Finnie, Gulzhan Ibraveya and the phenomenal guitar player Mark Grant. Paul and Gulzhan first met in Kazakhstan when both were working in the oil business where they started writing songs together and performing for their co-workers and the locals. Their first single ‘Your Sin City’ was released to rave reviews and gained considerable media coverage throughout the world.
Boasting a wide range of influences from Michael Jackson to Guns n Roses, the band is fronted by charismatic, Kazakhstani front-woman, Gulzhan who was recently described as, “The diminutive singer with the big voice” by The Scotsman, an observation which is certainly well founded.
October 11th sees the release of Universal You’s new single ‘ISKALA’ a cover of a very famous Russian song, which they have translated and recorded in English. The song was produced by world-renowned producer, Michael Brennan, who has a very successful CV, having worked with bands including Snow Patrol and The Super Furry Animals.
The band will be touring throughout the UK to support the release of the single and their forthcoming album later in the year.
Universal You-Iskala
It's not very often you get sent a CD by an Edinburgh based band featuring a lead singer hailing from the unlikely musical mecca of Kazakhstan, in fact I'm pretty sure that three-piece band, Universal You are a first in that catergory to have graced the Rhythm & Booze offices.
The band first formed when lead singewr Gulzan Ibraveya met Paul Finnie whilst they were both working in the oil industry in Gulzan's native country, originally performing songs to their fellow workers and local natives, the duo were soon joined by guitarist Mark Grant and set about releasing their wares to an unsuspecting world.
The band's debut single Your Sin City was released to critical acclaim, gaining coverage across the world and now the trio are set to release an intriguing follow up in the shape of Iskala, a cover version of a massive Russian anthem, which they've translated and recorded into English with the help of renowned producer Micheal Brennan (Snow Patrol, Super Furry Animals, etc).
To anyone yet to have surrendered to the seductive pop rock of Universal You, Iskala serves as a wonderfully seductive introduction to the band. Gulzan's soulful vocals soar provocatively over a gorgeous blend of pop hooks and melodic rock riffs, effortlessly captivating the listener and when Gulzan adds a few lines of Russian to an already potent mix you find yourself further entranced to the compelling and intoxicating sounds of Universal You.
If Iskala is anything to go by hook-laden pop rock has a new face in the form of the sultry songtress, Gulzhan Ibraveya and Universal You.
