Happy 546th birthday, Martin Waldseemüller! A German cartographer, he and Matthias Ringmann published a map of the world in 1507 called the Universalis Cosmographia in honor of Amerigo Vespucci, wherein the first naming of the New World was printed as America. [Evidently, Waldseemüller had later doubts and tried to repair the (as he saw it) error, calling the Americas terra incognita again, but the damage was done. Most of the original 1,000 copies have been lost, with the only known and verified copy now residing at the Library of Congress.]
