CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. Archive of scripts for an unproduced film version, circa 1960, of the Dostoevsky novel. Included are a plot summary, typescript draft, and draft script for an unproduced film, based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 1866 novel. Copies belonging to director Robert Rossen, with his holograph notations throughout. A classic of Russian literature presented here in a modern retelling. A philosophical study on the permissiveness of murder in the name of a higher calling, the original features ex-student Raskolnikov in Saint Petersburg, who plans and executes the murder of a pawnbroker for her cash. He believes he has the right to perform good deeds with the money to counterbalance his act, as well as simultaneously ridding the world of vermin. Set in New York City, Rossen's version modernizes the tale: Raskolnikov becomes Denny, a jazz trumpeter in a sleazy pool hall, his victims the owners of a pawnshop, while he is pursued by a pair of cops.
