Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers
This is a free resource maintained by the Library of Congress which provides an incredibly user friendly way to search hundreds of full text newspapers from 1860-1922. See Emmeline Pankhurst arrested:
Or read scans of influential original comic strips including Krazy Kat (published 1913-1944) by George Herriman (22 August 1880 – 25 April 1944). Fans of the cartoon include(d); ee cummings, William Randolph Hearst, Ernest Hemmingway; F. Scott Fitzgerald; Chris Ware. It influenced Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner by Chuck Jones', Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson. Michael Stipe of the rock band R.E.M. has a tattoo of Ignatz and Krazy on his right arm:
Other amazing comics you can view in Chronicling America include Little Nemo by Windsor McKay (September 26, 1869 – July 26, 1934) which ran October 15, 1905 – July 23, 1911 and September 3, 1911 – July 26, 1914. Here is an amazing Valentines day example from 1909:
This resource is maintained by the National Library of New Zealand and enables access to hundreds of national and regional titles from 1839-1945 giving an often unique perspective on historical events.
