Based on no actual research but mostly just personal experience, I'm convinced that most historical and cultural conventions of "modesty" for women arose from wanting to hide body parts that are generally unflattering, and had nothing to do with morality at all.
#Think about it#Upper arms?#Belly?#Thighs?#Even calves to some extent#Takes a lot of work to make those look nice and toned instead of flabby#Hair removal is an issue too#I think medieval women looked at their bodies and went: I'd rather just cover this up with some expensive fabric thanks#AND KNEES#Most knees are really not attractive#So yeah there's my two cents
