Uptown Circle Featured in “Shared Space” Research
The Uptown Circle is the only American case study featured in a shared space street design study conducted by professor Norman Garrick and Benjamin Wargo at the University of Connecticut. Shared space strategies reduce typical ROW elements like signage, traffic lights, and the grade separation between sidewalk and roadbed to calm traffic. The results heighten communication between drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists by requiring motorists to pay attention to their surroundings and slow down.
The study finds that in the right conditions shared space also makes intersections more efficient for both pedestrians and motorists.
