The Story

9:31 AM - 1 week following the incident in my store, the drone strike, and the ensuing battle for our community.

They began offering "enhanced water," also called Mater, as both an antidote to survivors and as a vaccine to the local public. The water is "enhanced" by the introduction of nanobots equipped with anti-A.I. algorithms and PTSD medications. Side effects include flu like symptoms, physical dependence, lethargy, mild amnesia, and erratic behavior. Vaccine for what?? A seemingly viral urban zombie outbreak, resulting from a failed attempt at mind-preservation nanotechnology by consumer tech giant B.E. - Basic Engineering. Tiny robots are multiplying and spreading to residents through bite wounds inflicted by escaped test subjects whose minds have been uploaded to the company server; and whose bodies are sustained by the flesh of the largest mammals available - humans.

However, it is mandated that every survivor seeking to leave quarantined areas agree to drink the so-called-vaccine. Potentially-"infected" residents remain quarantined until deemed stable by company psychiatrists. For the unfortunate victims of the botched commercial experiment in our community, the immediate future is a virtual death sentence - killed by zombies or other survivors. The only other option is volunteer to be medicated and institutionalized indefintely. Those of us who refuse leave our homes to be overtaken by "CROOKS" (the nickname given to the living dead by locals due to their awkard gait) do not see the above as options. Our youth have embraced lives like video game heroes while our neighbors feed on each other. We see no choice but to protect our community and forge an entirely new existence.
