Florida’s Colored Route Shields

A few of Florida’s “Kodachrome” US Route shields that I spotted in the panhandle of Florida last week. These were installed by the state up until 1993 when the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) told them the standard white US Route shield (pictured below). They have been steadily been getting replaced as time goes on, but a good number are still kicking around on side streets and county routes.

Oddly enough, despite having made Florida drop its colored route shields, the FHWA has allowed Alabama to keep posting its custom blue Appalachian Development Corridor US route shields, such as this one in Paint Rock, AL:
